Are you eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) examinations ?

All candidates, including a foreign national, must satisfy each of the following five criteria’s to appear in JEE (Advanced) examinations which are held every year during the month of April:

Criterion 1 – Performance in JEE (Main): The candidate must have appeared in the JEE (Main) examination and should score amongst the top 1,50,000 (all categories included) in JEE (Main) examinations. The CBSE board has also specified the percentages for various categories is as follows:

a)     50.5% for GEN (from the common merit list),

b)    27% for OBC- NCL,

c)     15% for SC and

d)    7.5% for ST. Within each of these four categories, 3% horizontal reservation is available for PwD candidates.

Criterion 2 – Age limit: Other criteria which has been defined is that

a)     the candidate should have been born on or after October 1, 1990 if belonging to the GEN or OBC-NCL category and

b)    If the candidate belongs to the SC, ST or PwD category then on or after October 1, 1985

Criterion 3 – Number of attempts: A candidate can sit for the JEE (Advanced) examinations a maximum of two times and that too in consecutive years. No exceptions will be allowed to this rule under any circumstances. Thus, as a candidate you will have to pass the JEE (Advanced) examination either in your first attempt OR maximum the second consecutive attempt.

Criterion  4  –  Appearance  in  Class  XII  (or  equivalent)  examination:  Its mandatory that the candidate should have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in all the subjects in the preceding year or in the year in which the JEE(Advanced) examinations have to be given.

If the candidate has given the class 12th examination in the preceding year and would like to re-appear in the class 12th examination then the candidate must appear in all class 12th subjects.

Criterion 5 – Earlier admission at IITs/ISM: If the candidate has taken admission to any of the IITs of ISM then the person will not be qualified to appear in the JEE (Advanced) examinations. This rule will apply for those candidates also who’s admission was cancelled due to any reason whatsoever.
