Computer Based test (CBT) Guidelines for CUET

Almost all NTA exams are conducted online and are called as Computer-Based Tests (CBTs). During a CBT, students are assigned a computer based on their assigned roll number and admit card. The student can login into the exam and after logging in, they receive examination instructions which are to be read very carefully post which the students will be able to view questions on the computer screen. With the help of your computer mouse you will be able to navigate and answer questions. One super convenient feature of CBTs is the ability to review and change your answers anytime during the exam.

CUET Exam important information

Candidates who will be appearing in CUET (UG) should also participate in the counseling/admission process of any University / Institution / Organization even though the student has not applied for that University / Institution / Organization in the Online Application Form of CUET (UG). This means that the student can apply to any other university after the results of the examination. However, it is important to also note that the candidates must fulfill the eligibility criteria of the course of the University / Institution / Organization to which they are seeking admission. This will help them to be flexible in choosing the desired university and also get the desired course.

Also, the University / Institution / Organization may admit any candidate who has appeared for CUET (UG) irrespective of the fact that the candidate has chosen that University / Institution / Organization in the online Application Form of CUET (UG). Moreover, the candidate must fulfill the eligibility criteria for the Course where the admission is being taken.

For the three Central Universities of Sanskrit, the candidate studying any of the subjects in the field of Shastric traditional subjects i.e. Sahitya, Vyakarana, Phalitha Jyotisha, Siddhanta Jyotisha, Nyaya, Advaita Vedanta, Visistadvaita Vedanta, Dvaita Vedanta, Sankhya Yoga, Agama, Mimamsa, Puranetihasa, Dharanasastra, Rigvedabhashyam, Krishna Yajurveda Bhashyam, Shukla Yajurveda Bhashyam, Samaveda Bhashyam, Atharva Veda Bhashyam, Vastu, may select Sanskrit (220) and/or Sanskrit (325) in the online Application Form of CUET (UG). Also, candidates are advised to select the subjects as per the mapping of Universities.

Many other universities also participate in the CUET program which includes state universities, private universities, deemed universities, and autonomous institutions. Process of correspondence with NTA regarding CUET

All the correspondence with NTA regarding CUET exam should preferably be addressed by e-mail. The email query shall be answered by NTA officials only if it is not anonymous and contains the students name, postal address, and contact number of the sender. Any email containing vague or general queries and other queries as contained in the Information Bulletin shall not be answered by the NTA. Emails shall not be answered from any person claiming to be representatives, associates, or officiates of the applicant candidate. The following information shall not be revealed by NTA:

a. Internal documentation/status.

b. The internal decision-making process of NTA. Any claim/counterclaim thereof.

c. Dates and venue of internal meetings or name of the staff/officers dealing with it.

d. Any information which cannot be revealed in the opinion of NTA.

In how many mediums is CUET exam conducted?
Common University Entrance Test (CUET (UG) is normally conducted in 13 mediums across India for admission into the Undergraduate Programmes. 

In what modes are CUET examination conducted?
The examination is conducted in in Hybrid mode which means it can be hand written and computer based examination too. The examination is conducted for admission into various Central Universities (CUs)and various Universities in India.

How many subjects are there in CUET exam?
There are total 61 subjects comprising of 33 languages, 27 domain-specific, and 01 General Test

For how many subjects can I give CUET exam?
You can give CUET exam for maximum 06 Test papers (04 or 05 domain subjects including General Test and 01 or 02 languages). Candidates may choose a maximum 06 Subjects including languages (Indian and Foreign) and General Test Note: It is advisable for candidates to select at least one language.

On which medium can I give CUET exam?
The CUET exam can be given in 13 languages (Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu)

What is the mode of the CUET Examination?
CUET is Hybrid mode (Pen & Paper + CBT) based exam.

How many questions are there in CUET exam?
The candidate has to attempt 40 out of 50 questions for all test papers and 50 out of 60 for the General Test (choice of 10 questions). Duration for all test papers would be 45 minutes except for Mathematics/Applied Mathematics, Accountancy, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Computer Science/Informatics Practices, and General Tests which would be 60 minutes.

What is the shift and duration of the CUET exam?
It is proposed that for Pen & paper mode, there may be three shifts in a day of about two hours duration.

What is the pattern of the CUET exam question paper?
CUET exam is an Objective type Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) based examination.

What are the qualifying examinations to appear in CUET exam?

  1. The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized Central/ State Board, such as the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi; etc. 
  2. Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University. 
  3. Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy 
  4. Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects. 
  5. Any Public School/ Board/ University examination in India or any foreign country is recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). 
  6. Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination.
  7. A Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State board of technical education of at least 3 years duration.
  8. General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
  9. High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
  10. Candidates who have completed the Class 12 (or equivalent) examination outside India or from a Board not specified above should produce a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) to the effect that the examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class 12 Examination.
  11. In case the Class 12 Examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination earlier.

What is the eligibility criteria for appearing in CUET exam?
For appearing in the CUET (UG), there is no age limit for the candidates. The candidates who have passed the class 12 /equivalent examination or are appearing in current year exam irrespective of their age can appear in the CUET (UG) examination. However, the candidates will be required to fulfill the age criteria (if any) of the University / Institution / Organization in which they are desirous of taking admission.

From where and how can I download admit card of CUET exam?
The e-Admit Card would be issued provisionally to the candidates through the NTA website: https://exams.nta.ac.in/CUET-UG/ subject to the fulfillment of the eligibility conditions and receipt of the prescribed application fee by NTA. No candidate will be allowed to appear at the examination Centre, on the date and shift/time other than that allotted to him/her in his/her Admit Card. In case a candidate is unable to download his/her Admit Card from the website, he/she should approach the NTA Help Line Number: 011-40759000 or 011-69227700 between 10.00 A.M. and 5.00 P.M.

What is the marking scheme for CUET exam?
For Multiple Choice Questions: To answer a question, the candidates need to choose one option corresponding to the correct answer or the most appropriate answer. However, if any anomaly or discrepancy is found after the process of challenges of the key verification, it shall be addressed in the following manner: i. ii. iii. Correct answer or the most appropriate answer: Five marks (+5) Any incorrect option marked will be given minus one mark (-1). Unanswered/Marked for Review will be given no mark (0).


How will I get the answer key for CUET exam?
The NTA will display the Provisional Answer Key of the questions on the NTA website: https://exams.nta.ac.in/CUET-UG/ with a Public Notice, issued to this effect on the said website, to provide an opportunity to the candidates to challenge the Provisional Answer Keys with a non-refundable online payment of ₹ 200/- per question challenged as processing charges. The provisional Answer Keys are likely to be displayed for two to three days. The result will be compiled based on the final answer key declared. No grievance with regard to answer key(s) after the declaration of result/NTA Score of CUET (UG) will be entertained.

What is the syllabus for CUET (UG)? 

There are 63 subjects/languages being offered for the CUET (UG) which are: 33 (languages) + 29 (subjects) + 01 (General Test). Language is to be tested through Reading Comprehension (based on different types of passages–Factual, Literary, and Narrative), Literary Aptitude, and Vocabulary. Subjects: As given on the NTA website https://exams.nta.ac.in/CUET-UG/ General Test: General Knowledge, Current Affairs, General Mental Ability, Numerical Ability, Quantitative Reasoning (Simple application of basic mathematical concepts arithmetic/algebra geometry/mensuration/stat), Logical and Analytical Reasoning. 

How has been the syllabus of the CUET (UG) prepared?

How to study topics which are there in syllabus but not given in the new NCERT Books?

These are the topics that are being taught in various School Boards i.e. Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Bihar School Education Board, National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education, Nagaland Board of School Education, Board of Secondary Education Manipur, have been kept in the available syllabus of the CUET (UG)

Is there any choice in the total number of questions in a subject? 

An overall choice of 10 questions is being offered in all 63 subjects/languages of the CUET (UG). 40 out of 50 questions are to be attempted in all subjects including languages. 50 out of 60 questions are to be attempted for General Test (501). 

In how many slots is CUET exam conducted?

The examination will be conducted on multiple days with 03 shifts in a day.

Is the duration of the test 45 minutes only for each Subject covered under CUET (UG)?

No, for Subjects such as Accountancy, Economics, Physics, Computer Science / Informatics Practices, Chemistry, Mathematics / Applied Mathematics, and General Test, the duration of the test will be 60 minutes. 

What does NTA stand for? 

NTA stands for the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is established by the Ministry of Education, MoE (Earlier known as the Ministry of Human Resource Development-MHRD) as an independent/ autonomous, self-reliant, and self-sustained premier testing organization.

What is CUET (UG)?

CUET (UG) stands for Common University Entrance Test (UG). CUET (UG) provides a single window opportunity for students to seek admission in any of the Central Universities (CUs), and other participating universities (State Universities, Autonomous Institutions, Private Universities, deemed Universities) across the country. CUET provides a common platform and equal opportunities to candidates across the country, especially those from rural and other remote areas, and helps establish better connections with the Universities. It is a single entrance test for admission to Central Universities and other participating universities (State Universities, Autonomous Institutions, Private Universities, deemed Universities) which will be admitting the candidates to their UG courses based on the NTA Score secured by them in this test. 

How will I prepare for both CUET?

The syllabus for the subject/domain tests of CUET (UG) will be based on Class 12 so that there is no pressure on the candidates to prepare for both exams. The effort that would be required to do well at CUET (UG) will also help candidates prepare well for their Board Examinations. Therefore, it would strengthen their learning.

Will the Board Exam become redundant now? 

The basic eligibility criterion for entrance into Universities remains unchanged which is that a candidate must have passed the Class 12 examination from any recognized Board or equivalent. In fact, marks in grade 12 for eligibility will vary across programs and Universities. Moreover, the Board examination is an Achievement test whereas CUET (UG) is a Selection Test. Hence, Board Exams at the Class 12 level are not likely to become redundant. 

What is CUET (UG) meant for?

It is meant for admission to UG courses of Central Universities and other participating Universities / Institutions / Organizations. Many other Institutions also have joined CUET (UG). The list of participating Institutions is available on the NTA website https://exams.nta.ac.in/CUET-UG/

What is the pattern of the test? 

The test will be objective type. The question paper will comprise Multiple-choice questions. 

How will the University admit the students to their courses? 

CUET (UG) has been designed in consonance with NEP where students will be able to choose the subjects for taking the test and each University will be able to see each student’s individual subject scores in subjects and admit students into their programmes based on their score in different subjects and languages. 

How can I pay the Application Fee for CUET?

You can pay the exam fee online using. SBI/ Canara Bank/ ICICI Bank/HDFC Bank through Debit Card/Credit Card/Net Banking/UPI/ Wallet. You need to keep proof of fee paid. In case the Confirmation Page is not generated after payment of the fee, the transaction will stand cancelled, and the amount will be refunded for the credit of your account. However, you will have to make another transaction, in case the Confirmation Page is not generated, and you want to appear in the test.
