Recently, a 6 km-long bicycle rally was organized by one of the prestigious Delhi schools to promote environmental awareness among the people. The rally , which was kicked off by the Chief Minister of Delhi , attracted over a thousand participants from schools all over the capital. The cyclists carried placards with the motto „Pollution free vehicle is my cycle‟. Most of the children who had never got an opportunity to ride a cycle in open space for such a long distance felt quite thrilled by their experience.
It is certainly true that an increasing use of bicycles would have a beneficial influence on the city‟s environment. But cycling has other benefits too and it was nice to find the children fully conversant with these benefits. According to one of the participants, “Riding a bicycle leads to sound health and body fitness in addition to being a lot of fun.” In fact, some students felt so enthusiastic about cycling that they urged the Chief Minister to provide separate cycling tracks on city roads so that they could ride their cycles to their schools. The Chief Minister agreed to give due consideration to this suggestion.
In a short speech while inaugurating the rally, the Chief Minister said that it is every citizen‟s responsibility to fight environmental pollution and taking a cue from these children, more and more people should turn to their bicycle, at least for short-distance travelling.

In the winter of 1994, Rajat‟s grandmother‟s health began to deteriorate.
Rajat would drive from Chandigarh to Shimla every few days to pay her a visit. He hated highway driving, finding it ugly and monotonous. He preferred to take meandering back roads to his grandmother‟s hospital. When he drove through the rocky towns of Solan, the beauty of the rough waters churning out of natural springs always captivated him.
Once, towards the end of such journey, he discovered a surprising bit of beauty. Along the median of the highway, there was a long stretch of wildflowers.
They were thin and delicate and purple, and swayed in the wind as if whispering poems to each other. The first time he saw the flowers, he was seized by an uncontrollable urge to pull over on the highway and pluck a bunch from the soil. He carried them into his grandmother‟s room when he arrived at the hospital and placed them in a water pitcher by her bed. For a moment his grandmother seemed more lucid than usual. She thanked Rajat for the flowers, commented on their beauty and asked where he had got them from. Rajat was overjoyed by the ability of the flowers to wake something up inside his ailing grandmother. Afterwards, Rajat began carrying scissors in the car during his trip to visit his grandmother. He would quickly jump out of the car and clip a bunch of flowers. Each time Rajat placed the flowers in the pitcher, his grandmother‟s eyes would light up and they would have a splendid conversation.
