Articles

Definition: Articles are words that defines a noun as specific or unspecific.
Examples:
1. After the long day, the cup of tea tasted particularly good.
Here, by using article The, we have shown that it was one specific day that was long and one specific cup of tea that tasted good.

2. After a long day, a cup of tea tasted particularly good.
Here, by using article a, we have created a general statement, implying that any cup of tea woud taste good after any long day.

The articles are of two types.
*Definite articles
* Indefinite articles

1. Definite articles : the’ is a definite article. We use the article if we refer to a specific person, thing or place.
Examples: 1. He lives in the city of Agra.
2. He saw the hospital is near our house.
3. Please give the oranges kept in basket.

2. Indefinite articles: A and An are called indefinite articles. We use indefinite articles if we refers to person, place or thing in general. Here we do not specify any thing.

We use article a when a noun begins with a consonant sound.
Example: a book, a banana, a letter.
While we use article an when a noun begins with vowel sound.

• Nouns such as uniform , unicorn or European begins with a consonant sound – yu. Hence, we say a uniform, a unicorn or a European.
