Concept 5. Common and proper nouns

• Proper nouns are always in capital letters everywhere in a sentence.
• Names of people, colleges, universities, hotels, months, days of the week, cities, countries, rivers, mountains are proper nouns.

Concept 8.Action Verbs in a sentence.

Prepositions

Prepositions are words that tell the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word.

  • A clause has a subject and a verb. It gives meaning.
  • A phrase is not a complete sentence.

  • A phrase doesn’t give a complete meaning.

ANN AND FRANK One day Ann and Frank went to the lake with Rover. Rover can swim well, so Frank made him go into the water after a stick. "Jump, Rover! Dependent clause

A dependent clause is a sentence that has a subject and a verb, but can’t stand alone.

Example : I study hard. (can stand alone)

If I study hard( can’t stand alone). This is because of “If”.

Unless I come to school, (dependent) it doesn’t give full information.

4.Complex sentences

When we put independent and dependent clauses together, they become a complex sentence.

Example. If I study hard, (dependent)

I will pass the exam. (Independent)

Put them together. It becomes a complex sentence.

Look: If I study hard, I will pass the exam. (Complex sentence) clear?

Words to make a complex sentence are in this box.

Exercise. Underline the complex sentence. Circle the word that makes it complex.

• I go to school.

• Unless I study hard, I will fail the exam.

4.1. Comma in complex sentences

If the complex sentences starts with words; as, if , unless, although, even though, because, since, while, when, before, after etc… put the comma after the first sentence.

Example. If I plant trees, I will protect drought. (We need a comma)

Example 2. I will protect drought if I plant trees. (We don’t need a comma)

  • Don’t put a comma when the dependent clause comes after the dependent clause.

Exercise. Put a comma where it is necessary. Read the example above.

• Unless you wake up early you will be late.

• Because she came late she missed the test.

• While I was studying he was watching TV.

Adjectives

Definition: The adjectives are the describing words that tells more about nouns.
Examples: 1. Vinod is a tall boy.
2. This pond is muddy.
3. The flower are red in colour.
Here, tall, muddy and red are adjectives.

Types of adjectives.
1. Descriptive Adjective or Adjective of quality.
2. Demonstrative Adjective,.

5. Possessive Adjectives
6. Interrogative Adjectives.

In this chapter we will study about Descriptive Adjective or Adjective Of Quality.

Types of Sentences
There are four types of sentences.

3. The third sentence shows a strong feelings so it ends with a exclamation mark(!)
4. The fourth sentence shows an order or a request so it ends with a full stop(.).
