COCA-COLA
Dr John Pemberton was a pharmacist in Atlanta. He was experimenting and trying to create new drugs during 1886, as he’d been doing for many years. Until then, whatever he’d made always failed. One eventful day in 1886, he created a kind of flavoured syrup and mixed it with carbonated water. The drink tasted nice and he really liked it but as a pharmacist, John had no idea how to advertise or sell it. So, he approached his friend Frank M Robinson. Frank gave the drink a name, designed the logo and got the formula registered with the patent office. That’s how Coca-Cola started its journey of 130 years and still going strong.
The drink did not sell well during the first year. So, John sold his business to an American businessman named Asa G Candler. To promote the sale of Coke, Candler came up with many innovative ideas, such as serving people free samples of the drink. It is said that the first servings of Coca-Cola were sold for 5 cents a glass. By 1894, sales picked up and Coke was being sold outside Atlanta through soda fountains. In 1899, an idea was put forth to bottle the drink so that it could be easily available beyond the soda fountain. Candler sold the bottling rights for $1 with a promise that as long as it did not compromise the quality of the drink they could bottle it.
After over 5 years of research, a bottle with a cap was designed and by 1909, there were nearly 400 bottling plants all over America. However, it was not easy to find a unique bottle design for the drink to protect it from imitators. It was only in 1916 that workers from a glass plant in Indiana came up with the winning design which was actually based on misinformation – they thought cocoa was an ingredient in Coca-Cola so they made the bottle look like a cocoa seed. The design was slimmed down and the curved bottle design was approved. Today, it is the world’s leading sparkling beverage with an estimated sale of nearly $1.9 billion globally. All thanks to Dr John Pemberton.
