Anglerfish
The angry-looking deep sea anglerfish has a right to be cranky. It is quite possibly the ugliest animal on the planet, and it lives in what is easily Earth’s most unfriendly habitat: the lonely, lightless bottom of the sea.
There are more than 200 species of anglerfish, most of which live in the murky depths of the Atlantic and Antarctic oceans, up to a mile below the surface, although some live in shallow, tropical environments. Generally dark gray to dark brown in colour, they have huge heads and enormous crescentshaped mouths filled with sharp, translucent teeth. Some anglerfish can be quite large, reaching up to 3.3 feet (1 metre) in length and can weigh up to 50 kg. Most however are significantly smaller, often less than twelve inches.
Their most distinctive feature, worn only by females, is a piece of their spine that protrudes above their mouths like a fishing pole—hence their name, as the word angler means a person who fishes with a rod and line. Tipped with an attraction of luminous flesh this built-in rod baits prey close enough to be grabbed. Their mouths are so big and their bodies so elastic, they can actually swallow prey up to twice their own size.
The male, which is significantly smaller than the female, has no need for such an adaptation. In lieu of continually seeking the vast gorge for a female, it has evolved into a permanent opportunistic mate.
When a young, free-swimming male angler encounters a female, he latches onto her with his sharp teeth. Over the time, the male physically fuses with the female, connecting to her skin and bloodstream and losing his eyes and all his internal organs except the testes. A female can carry six or more males on her body.

FOR QUESTIONS 29 TO 35, CHOOSE THE BEST OPTION TO FILL EACH BLANK
Why is the sea wa ter salty?
One clue to how the sea became salty is the presence of salt lakes such as the Great Salt Lake and the Dead Sea. Both are about 10 times saltier (29) sea water. Why are these lakes salty while most of the world’s lakes are not? Lakes are temporary (30) areas for water. Rivers and streams bring water to the lakes, and other rivers carry water out of lakes. Thus, lakes are really only wide depressions in a river channel that have been (31) with water. Water flows in one end and out from the other. The Great Salt Lake, Dead Sea, and other salt lakes have no outlets. All the water that flows into these lakes (32) only by evaporation. When water evaporates, the dissolved salts are left behind. So a few lakes are salty because rivers carried salts to the lakes, the water in the lakes (33) and the salts were left behind. After years and years of river inflow and evaporation, the salt content of the lake water built up to the present levels. The same (34) made the seas salty. Rivers carry dissolved salts to the ocean. Water evaporates from the oceans to (35) again as rain and to feed the rivers, but the salts remain in the ocean. Because of the huge volume of the oceans, hundreds of millions of years of rivers input were required for the salt content to build to its present level.
