10 Give any three evidences to show that people began leading a settled life in the Neolithic age.

10 I.Archaeologists have found traces of huts or houses at some sites. For instance, in Burzahom (in present-day Kashmir) people built pit-houses, which were dug into the ground, with steps leading into them.

II.These may have provided shelter in cold weather.

III.Archaeologists have also found cooking hearths both inside and outside the huts, which suggests that, depending on the weather; people could cook food either indoors or outdoors.

IV.Stone tools have been found from many sites as well

11 Discuss the sources of raw materials for the Harappans?

11 i) While some of the raw materials that the Harappans used were available locally, many items such as copper, tin, gold, silver and precious stones had to be brought from distant places.

ii)The Harappans probably got copper from present-day Rajasthan, and even from Oman in West Asia.

iii) Tin, which was mixed with copper to produce bronze, may have been brought from present-day Afghanistan and Iran.

iv) Gold could have come all the way from present-day Karnataka, and prec ious stones from present - day Gujarat, Iran and Afghanistan.

12 Forests-

· Elephants from the forest were captured and trained for the army.

· Forests also provided wood for building houses, carts and chariots Rivers : used for transportation, water supplies and making land fertile.

13 · They found that people lived in huts.

· They kept cattle as well as other animals.

14 Discrimination happens when people act on their prejudices or stereotypes. If you do something to put other people down, if you stop them from taking part in certain activities and taking up jobs, prevent them from taking water from the same well, you are discriminating against them.

Discrimination can take place because of several reasons:

i)Groups of people who may speak a certain language, follow a particular religion, live in specific regions etc; may be discriminated against as their customs or practices may be seen as inferior.

ii)People who are poor do not have the resources or the money to meet their basic need of food, clothing and shelter. They experience discrimination in offices,hospitals,schools etc where they are treated badly because they are poor.

15 Every country needs a government to make decisions and get things done. These can be-

· The decisions where to build roads and schools.

· Controls the price of food items when they get too expensive

· It ensures ways to increase the supply of electricity or water.

· The government also takes action on many social issues, for example it has several programmes to help the poor.

· It runs postal and railway services.

· It protects the boundaries of the country and maintaining peaceful relations with other countries.(any 3)

17 · Voting is important because through voting in elections people elect leaders to represent them.

· These representatives take decisions on behalf of the people and in doing so it is assumed that they will keep in mind the voices and interests of the people.

18 Give reasons why conflicts occur in a country. What does this lead to?

18 · Conflicts occur when people of different cultures, religions, regions or economic backgrounds do not get along with each other, or when some among them feel they are being discriminated against.

· People may use violent means to settle their differences.

This leads to fear and tension among others living in an area.

19 Enumerate the features of lines of longitude.

19 · They are drawn to join the poles.

· They are semi-circles and the distance between them decreases steadily pole wards until it becomes zero at the poles, where all the meridians meet.

· All meridians are of equal length

· 0° meridian is called the Prime Meridian.

· They are 360 in number.

· The letter E for the east and W for the west follows the longitude of a place.

Ans.The circle that divides the day from night on the globe is called the Circle of illumination.

When Northern Hemisphere is tilted towards the sun, the North Pole is also inclined towards it and the places beyond the Arctic Circle experience continuous daylight for about six months and the South Pole experiences night at this time.

21 · The Indian Ocean is the only ocean named after a country, that is, India.

· The shape of ocean is almost triangular.

· In the north, it is bound by Asia, in the west by Africa and in the east by Australia.

22 Amongst the various site discovered through excavation , Mehrgarh is considered to be the most important one. Analyse

22 i) Mehrgarh was probably one of the places where women and men learnt to grow barley and wheat, and rear sheep and goats for the first time in this area.

ii) It is one of the earliest villages that we know about.

iii) Other finds at Mehrgarh include remains of square or rectangular houses.

iv) Each house had four or more compartments, some of which may have been used for storage.

· Rajas wives and sons- had to perform a variety of minor rituals.

· Other rajas- were simply spectators who had to sit and watch the performance of the sacrifice.

25 The constitution of India says that all the people are equal in the eyes of law.

26 Cauvery water dispute is between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

· The water stored in Krishnasagar dam in Karnataka is used for irrigating a number of districts and for meeting the needs of the city of Bangalore.

· The water stored in Mettur dam in Tamil Nadu is used for crops grown in the delta region of that state.

· A conflict arises because both dams are on the same river.

· The downstream dam in Tamil Nadu can only be filled up if water is released from the upstream one located in Karnataka.

· Therefore, both states can't get as much water as they need for people in their states. This leads to conflict between them.

27 The mid-day sun is exactly overhead at least once a year on all latitudes in

between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. This area, therefore, receives the maximum heat and is called the Torrid Zone

The mid-day sun never shines overhead on any latitude beyond the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The angle of the sun’s rays goes on decreasing towards the poles. As such, the areas bounded by the Tropic of

Cancer and the Arctic Circle in the Northern Hemisphere, and the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle in the Southern Hemisphere, have moderate temperatures. These are, therefore, called Temperate Zones.

Areas lying between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole in the Northern Hemisphere and the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole in the Southern Hemisphere are very cold. It is because here the sun does not rise much above the horizon.

Therefore, its rays are always slanting. These are, therefore, called Frigid Zones.

28 On 22nd December, the Tropic of Capricorn receives direct rays of the sun as the South Pole tilts towards it.

As the sun’s ray’s fall vertically at the Tropic of Capricorn, a larger portion of the Southern Hemisphere gets light.

Therefore, it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere with longer days and shorter nights. This position of the earth is called the Winter Solstice.

Seasons change due to the change in the position of the earth’s revolution around the sun

29 Define biosphere. Give an example stating how the three domains of the Earth interact with each other?

Ans. Biosphere—

· All the living organisms including humans are linked to each other and to the biosphere for survival.

· The organisms in the biosphere may broadly be divided into the plant kingdom and the animal kingdom.

· The three domains of the earth interact with each other and affect each other in some way or the other.

For example, cutting of forests for fulfilling our needs of wood, or clearing land for agriculture may lead to fast removal of soil from slopes. Similarly earth’s surface may be changed due to natural calamities like earthquakes.
