I. Read the poem and answer the questions that follow:
Playing Catch
by Liana Mahoney
She tosses me the ball. I toss it back to Sis.
She throws it really high: “Let‟s see you catch this!”
The sun is in my eyes! Where IS that ball now?
I‟ve got to spot the ball and catch it somehow.
I‟m waiting and I‟m waiting. My glove is waiting, too.
I‟m looking up, not looking down. I trip on my left shoe.
I‟m diving toward the ground. My arms are stretched out straight.
I open up my glove, but I‟m afraid that I‟m too late.
I can‟t believe my eyes. I think I see the ball!
It‟s nestled in my glove; I caught it after all!

Reading Comprehension
Read the letter below and answer the following questions:
Dear Rachael
You know, it got very cold here this past week, and it snowed! Not much snow for German standards, but a lot nonetheless. I went for a walk across the field near my house today and into the forest. Forests in the wintertime are so beautiful; I am now realizing how fortunate I am to have been born here! I feel privileged to experience such wonderful seasons here. The seasons are very pronounced in Germany, more so than in the UK. Summer is hot and sunny, autumn is painted yellow and red, and winter is cold, sometimes very cold, with lots of snow. And spring is actually quite similar to spring in the UK. I'll try to get hold of a camera; unfortunately I haven't got one at the moment. I can then take some pictures of the forest for you to see. Have you ever seen trees whose long and thin twigs are completely encased in layers of ice?
Where the whole forest is filled with crackling noises when the wind blows through the canopies because the ice around the twigs cracks slightly when they bend? And tall tree trunks, having lost all their leaves, stand firm – their highest branches move back and forth slowly, 30m above you when you throw your head back to take a glance at the sky. You see individual rays of sunlight, shining through the gaps between the trees. You also see very fine snowflakes, like dust of ice, slowly falling through the air. It is so beautiful that you wonder how people could forget how special this earth is and instead, turn to spending all their time sitting in an office, typing letters on a keyboard, not to earn a living, but to earn the admiration of others.
Write to me,
Love
Emma

During the rush hour two cars collided. Both the drivers began to argue. The woman behind the two cars stopped her car suddenly. This made the driver following her brake hard. His wife was sitting beside him holding a large cake. She was thrown forward and the cake went right out through the window. It landed on the road. Seeing a cake flying through the air a lorry driver stopped suddenly. There were empty bottles of soft drinks in the lorry. Hundreds of them fell off the back of the vehicle and onto the road. Meanwhile the traffic piled up behind. It took the police nearly an hour to get the traffic on the move again. In the meantime the lorry driver had to sweep up hundreds of broken bottles. Only two stray dogs benefited from all this confusion. They happily ate up what was left of the cake.
