5. COMPREHENSION PASSAGE

Read the passage carefully :

Chameleons

Chameleons are the oddest of all lizards. They camouflage themselves by changing their colours to match what is around them.
Most chameleons live in trees. They have very long tails. They use their tails to catch hold of tree branches. They also have grasping pads on their feet. These pads help them to hold firmly onto the tree branches. These special features make it easy for chameleons to climb.
Chameleons’ tongues are longer than their heads and bodies put together. There is a sticky spot at the end of their tongues. The chameleons shoot their tongues out and catch insects with this sticky spot. Then, they snap their tongues right back and enjoy their insect meal.
Chameleons’ eyes are on cones that stick out from the sides of their heads. Each eye can move in a different direction from the other. It is a strange sight to see a chameleon with one eye pointing upwards and the other eye pointing downwards.

Q1. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:

Many people think that we are the only creatures that look to the stars and see pictures, but there are others that look up and see things. Where we see the Big Dipper in the sky at night, the gorillas and monkeys see the Great Banana. Here is why…Once upon a time, a great banana tree grew in the jungle. It was taller than all the others around it. The King of the Gorillas waited patiently beneath the tree for the first bananas to ripen, so he could shake them down. He was as strong as he was patient, but there was another one who also knew of the tree. The King of the Monkeys was sneaky and fast. He also loved bananas very much. He waited nearby the great banana tree. He watched the Gorilla King and laughed. He knew that he could climb quickly and steal the banana before the Gorilla could shake it down. So, the Monkey King waited, too. When the first giant banana had finally ripened, the Monkey King snuck up the back of the tree and took it. The Gorilla King smelled something suspicious, because he never trusted monkeys. He glanced up and saw the Monkey King stealing his banana! With great anger, he shook the tree, and the Monkey King fell from the tree, still holding the banana. Upon the ground, the two kings struggled to have the banana. They could not share, and they could not give up. Finally, as the two squeezed and fought for the banana, it shot out of their hands with great force. The banana sailed high into the sky and became caught in the stars. Sadly, the great banana tree had been destroyed in their fight, and the two kings had become enemies. The Great Banana still hangs in the sky to remind them of their selfishness. The banana had been big enough to share, but they had chosen not to.

Disadvantages of Fast Food

Fast food nutrition should make up a minimal part of a healthy diet. Fast food and junk foods are high in fat, sodium and sugar, which can lead to obesity and a range of attendant health problems, including diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. Here are the facts about how excessive junk food consumption affects your body. Junk food doesn’t contain the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. As a result, you may feel chronically fatigued and lack the energy you need to complete daily tasks. The high levels of sugar in junk food puts your metabolism under stress; when you eat refined sugar, your pancreas secretes high amounts of insulin to prevent a dangerous spike in blood sugar levels.

Rainbows are often seen when the sun comes out after or during a rainstorm. Rainbows are caused when sunlight shines through drops of water in the sky at specific angles. When white
sunlight enters a raindrop, it exits the raindrop a different color. When light exits lots of different raindrops at different angles, it produces the red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet that you see in a rainbow. Together, these colors are known as the spectrum. These colors can sometimes be seen in waterfalls and fountains as well.
Did you know that there are double rainbows? In a double rainbow, light reflects twice inside water droplets and forms two arcs. In most double rainbows, the colors of the top arc are opposite from those in the bottom arc. In other words, the order of colors starts with purple on top and ends with the red on bottom. In addition, rainbows sometimes appear as white arcs at night. These rainbows are called moonbows and are so rare that very few people will ever see one. Moonbows are caused by moonlight (rather than sunlight) shining through drops of water.
