One day Polly heard a sad cry coming from a bush. When she went to see what it was, she found a little brown puppy that had got into the bush but couldn’t get out of it. Very carefully, without hurting it, Polly took the puppy out. She took it home and called it Berry. She grew very fond of her puppy. But one day just before Christmas, Berry was lost.
When Polly called him for breakfast, before she went off to school, he didn’t come. She thought that he was away on his little run, so she left for school. But when she came back late in the afternoon, Berry was still not there. Mother told her, “Johny, Maria and I searched the entire neighbourhood, but we have not been able to find Berry.”
Polly hurried over tea, and although it was dark and beginning to rain, she went all round the garden calling to him. Then she went up the path to ask at the neighbours’ houses. ‘Berry, Berry ’, Polly called out. Suddenly, she heard a whimper. She shone her torch in the direction of the sound and to her amazement she found Berry sitting near the shrub she had found him. Polly hugged him and took him home. Mishook's nose. He growled furiously, shook his head, jumped, snorted, turned around like a spinning top and with great difficulty, he managed to get rid of the troublesome bee with his paws. But this happening did not shake him and he had his taste of honey which he became very fond of.
