SECTION A - Reading

A.1.Read the following passage carefully.

Trees show the variation in seasons and nature’s most colourful show put up, especially during the fall. The changing colours of autumn signal that the trees are getting ready for winter. Throughout the spring and summer most of the food necessary for the trees to grow is made in the leaves. The food making process takes place in the cells containing chlorophyll which gives leaves their green colour.

It falls partly because of the shorter period of daylight and the cooler temperatures that the leaves stop making food. The chlorophyll breaks down and the green colour disappears. Yellow and orange, previously masked by the green, appear. The vibrant reds, purples and the bronzes come from other chemical processes. The brilliant red of maple has a ‘sweet’ side.

In the warmth of the fall days, sugar is produced in the leaves and then trapped by the night’s chill. The more sugar it accumulates, the  righter red the leaves turn.

White butterflies danced on wing,
And still the singing skylark soared,
And silent sank and soared to sing.
The cornfield stretched a tender green
To right and left beside my walks;

Somewhere among the million stalks.

While swift the sunny moments slid,
Perhaps his mate sat listening long,
