Seven Basic Symbols to write any Roman Numeral.
They are as follows :-
Roman Numeral - l V X L C D M
Hindu-Arabic Numeral- 1 5 10 50 100 500 1000
Rules of Roman Numeral -
Rule -1 Repetition of Roman Numeral means addition –
Examples :- a) ll = l + l = 2 , b) lll = l + l + l = 3 .
c) XX = 10+10 =20 , d) XXX = 10+10+10 =30 .
Now, important thing is that -
i) Only l and X can be repeated in Roman Numeral. The numeral ‘V’ is never repeated .
ii) No numeral can be repeated more than three times .
Rule -2 A smaller numeral written to the right of a large numeral is always added to the larger numeral .
Examples :- a) Vl=5+1= 6 b) Xl = 10 + 1 =11
Rule -3 A smaller numeral written to the left of a larger numeral is always subtracted from the larger numeral .
Examples :- a) lV=5 – 1 = 4 b) lX = 10 – 1 = 9
Rule -4 For numbers beyond 10, we first write the numbers in groups of 10s and 1s and then form the Roman Numeral corresponding to the given number
Examples :- a) 11=10+1=Xl b) 20 = 10+10= XX
To Write 40 in Roman Numeral - 40 = XL Since X cannot be repeated more
than three times, We cannot write 40 as XXXX .
