PRESSURE
Pressure
Pressure is the force of an object over another object acted over specific area. The force spreads over large area creates low pressure while the forces collect on small area and produce more pressure. Thus two objects of the same weight but different shape produces different amount of pressure.

Pressure of Solids
Everything has weight. Thus, weight produces pressure on another object it rests on. The pressure of a solid depends on its weight and shape. As the weight of the solid body increases its pressure also increases. As the weight of a solid
body decreases its pressure also decreases. Thus, we can conclude that the pressure of a solid body has a direct relationship with its weight/ force/. In addition to this, the pressure of solid body depends on the area over which it rests. As the area over which a solid body rests on increases, its pressure decreases. But as the area over which the solid body rests on decreases its pressure increases. Thus, the pressure of a solid body differs based on its shape. Therefore, we can conclude that the pressure of a solid body has an inverse relationship with the area of the body it rests on.
Grade 3 G.S General Science 1

Two bodies of equal weight but having different shape produce different pressure

Pressure in Liquids
Like solids, liquids have weight. As a result of this weight liquids create pressure on the base and the walls of their container. The pressure of a liquid depends on the depth. The pressure created/produced/ by a liquid increases with increase in depth.
But the pressure of a liquid decreases with decrease in depth. Thus we can conclude that pressure of a liquid has direct relationship with depth.
Grade 3 G.S General Science 2

pressure of liquid at different depth

Pressure in Gases
Like solids and liquids, gases occupy space. Air molecules fill up any empty spaces available indefinitely. They create pressure on the wall of lightly closed container.

Atmospheric Pressure

We live in an ocean of air. This ocean of air that covers the Earth is called atmosphere. It produces on everything its weight rests. We don’t feel this pressure because it acts on us equally in all directions.
Grade 3 G.S General Science 3
We can’t see atmospheric air but we can confirm that it produces pressure on everything it rests on.

Uses of pressure
We use pressure for different purposes. Some of the uses of pressure are the following:

1. Nails are made on the principles of pressure. They have sharpened and pointed end. This decreases the area over which the nail rests on the wooden material. This means that sharpened and pointed end of the nail rests on small area.

Thus the force used to push the nail high pressure. This high pressure easily pushes the nail into the wood.
Grade 3 G.S General Science 4

2. A knife is used to cut various objects. We sharpened when it gets blunt. A sharpened knife blade rests on small area of the object to be cut. Thus the force used to cut the object has high pressure. This high pressure enables us to cut the object easily.
Grade 3 G.S General Science 5
3. The various cars and/ or machines, and equipment’s’ use the pressure created by liquids and gases. You might have seen these applications.

Pressure is used to/in
- inflate balloons                         - inflate football bladder
- inflate swimming tubes             - inflate tires of vehicles
- syringes                                  - water pump
- siphon                                      - rubber Suckers
- hydraulic press                        - car brake
- Carburetor                                 - city bus doors etc.
