Weather and farming
Because regions have different soils and climates, farmers use different farming methods. When there is little rain, many crops cannot grow. People use dry farming methods in areas where little rain falls. Since summer can be very dry in the Midwest, dry farming is often used there. Dry farming is sometimes used in other regions if they don’t get enough rain. When farmers plant in rows across hills, rain gets trapped in these rows. Because water cannot flow downhill, it moistens the rows of plants. Farmers expect a good crop when they dry farm. Before the weather gets too hot, barley is planted. After barley is ripe, it is ready to be picked. The soil in an unplanted field becomes richer when crops are not drawing out minerals.
