Q1. Define the term ‘Prejudice’ with one example.
Answer Prejudice means to judge other people negatively or see them as inferior. For eg: if we think English is the best language and other languages are not important, we are judging these other languages negatively. As a result, we might not respect people who speak languages other than English.
Q2. On what grounds can a ‘prejudice’ be created?
Answer We can be prejudiced about many things like:
1. People’s religious beliefs
2. Skin colour
3. Different regions that people belong to
4. The accent they speak in
5. Clothes they wear
Q3. Define the term ‘Stereotypes’ with one example.
Answer When we fix people into one image we create ‘stereotypes’. When people say that those who belong to a particular country, religion, sex, race or economic background are “stingy”, “lazy”, “criminal” or “dumb”, they are using stereotypes.
Q4. Define the term ‘Discrimination’ with one example.
Answer Discrimination happens when people act on their prejudice or stereotypes. If you do something to put other people down, if you stop them from taking part in certain activities or from taking job opportunities, stop them from living in certain neighbourhoods, prevent them from taking water from the same well or hand pump or not allow themselves to take tea in the same cups or glasses, you are discriminating against them.

Answer Discrimination can broadly take place on two major grounds:
1. Customs and practices
Customs and practices can take into account the following things:
a. Group of people who may speak different language
b. Follow a particular religion
c. Live in specific regions
2. Economic backgrounds
Economic status is not the form of diversity but a form of inequality. Inequality happens when certain sections of the society are not treated at par with the rest of the society. For example -‘Tribal Groups’.
Q6. Define ‘Untouchability’? Which particular community in Bombay presidency was treated as untouchables?
Answer The groups that were paced at the bottom of the ladder and were seen as unworthy were called as untouchables. They were also called as ‘Dalits’. Mahar community in Bombay presidency was treated as untouchables.

Answer Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, one of the greatest leaders of India shared his first experience of caste-based discrimination which took place in 1901.
