Today India is recognized as one of the biggest procurement destinations for Textiles, Garments, Finish and Accessories. It does provide a quality blend of designs, fashion, pattern, colours, texture and finish. The apparel sector contributes to around 7% of India’s exports. No wonder that textile design courses are sought after these days.

An understanding on the role of a textile designer is paramount before getting into why this course is considered important. A Textile designer is primarily responsible for creating a two/ three dimensional pattern that can be repeated on a variety of products that incorporates textiles. They may include a piece of clothing intended to be manufactured on a very high scale or they might be used in items commonly found in homes like rugs, carpets, drapes and screens.

Bachelor of Arts in Textile Design course explores the three basic textile design practices – print, knit and weave hand in hand with digital and non traditional approaches to textile design and printing, trend prediction and analytics and presentation skills. It will help maximize the aspirant/ candidates’ creative and intellectual potential, develop his/her own design philosophy and gain the confidence to challenge conventional practices. This can be called as a specialised course which emphasizes on highly creative textile design for fashion and encourages the use of both traditional and sophisticated modern technology. Apart from the above, subjects like drawing, colour workshops, importance and usage of digital techniques in design and an understanding of the basic materials which go into textile manufacture are taught. This programme is for a period of three years.

Upon successful graduation, candidates get into the textile designer role/ digital specialist role in the fashion industry. Since this role is from where the design starts from the table and is of a technical nature it becomes a lot more important in the whole ecosystem. While most of them choose to get into a job, some of the candidates also pursue a Masters in Textile design.

A candidate upon successful completion of HSC or equivalent board with minmum of 50% aggregate is eligible to apply for admission for this course. Considering the large number of applicants, lots of institutions have their entrance exams and tests as well.
