Q.1: Read the passage given below and answer the question that follow:
1. Polythene shopping bags and wrappers are potential threat to urban environment. Once you have discarded them after use, you do not lose your link with them. They return to you in a variety of ways, though you do not realise it. For example, they choke your drains and provide breeding facilities to deadly germs.
2. A recent study has shown that about 250 tonnes of plastic wastes come out of various colonies of major cities alone every day. This disrupts the sewer system, the essential arteries of city life. These plastic wastes choke the land mass and clog the pores of the wetlands.
3. Unfortunately, even the villages and small towns are not free from this danger. Millions of people returning to their hometowns every day carry their shopping in colourful bags. This pleases their family and children, who after preserving them for a time, dispose them in wells, rivers, tanks and drains. Many throw them off into the fields. They do it with a sense of pride, to show off. When their neighbours see that their men from the cities regularly bring them those good things of life, they are impressed.
4. In Delhi, the worst offenders are the upper income groups of the so-called posh colonies. Though educated, the residents of these affluent areas are unaware of the damage done by the plastic bags. Nearly a million children in Delhi schools carry their lunch boxes in plastic bags. They callously throw them away and cause unhealthy environment.
5. As it is convenient for mothers to wrap the food in plastic, it is difficult to persuade them against doing this. According to the drill master of a school in RK Puram, it becomes a drill to clean the field after the children leave. "When the midday meal scheme is fully implemented, it must be seen that no plastic wrappers are used.
6. As these wrappers are light in weight, they are borne aloft by the wind causing visual shocks. Unlike cotton or paper bags, they remain undissolved in the mud and stop the rainwater from seeping deep into the earth. This affects the natural growth of greenery.

Q.2 Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
1. “Teenagers? Stress? You must be joking:” This is probably the reaction when asked whether teenagers get fretful and apprehensive. For, it is generally believed that they have "no responsibilities, no worries and no duties."
2. But that is not true. In today's competitive world, one needs to struggle and fight to make it in this dynamic, yet uncertain environment that is both stressful and anxiety inducing. Teenagers face myriads of pressures, three of which are briefly discussed here.
3. The pressure to perform, i.e. to do well academically come principally from parents, teachers and peers. The lack of aptitude tests or respecting the students’ preferences pushes them into fields which may not interest them or for which they are not equipped. Apart from the pressure to perform well, they are often burdened with the pressure to conform to the norms laid down by society. Next, teenagers are pressurised to reform themselves. This is commonly experienced especially by students in the age group of 13 to 17. Everybody is telling them when to wake up and what to do. Here's what you can do to deal with these pressures. As a result of pressure, teenagers are often found to be very anxious. A sign of anxiety is holding one's breath. The easy way out is to take deep breaths at regular intervals, trying to calm your mind.
4. Modern life's competitiveness and challenges put a tremendous load of work on teenagers. They need to understand that they are strong enough to handle the tough challenges in life, studying and assignments being two of them. Procrastinators, i.e. people who habitually delay and postpone doing their work, need to cultivate "the art of starting" and this involves dealing with the minor discomfort experienced while beginning a task. Once a job has started, it is much easier to continue.
5. Some students worry about factors like social and financial status, intelligence and habits that might make them different from their peers. Effective stress management lies in having a healthy attitude towards competition, work, friends and acquaintances. It lies in taking life as it comes, doing your best and being prepared for the worst.
