1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :
A white elephant is a freak of nature in the same way as a white tiger and a white python are. Only white elephants are less of a rarity. In ancient India elephant breeders treated a white elephant with great attention. Valmiki mentions how there were, in the stables of Ravana, elephants which resembled white clouds in colour. In 1961, a white elephant was captured in the central lands near Baegethu Ot in South Vietnam. The Vietnamese believe that a white elephant is an incarnation of some celestial king.
A white elephant captured in northern Siam had an interesting journey when he was taken to the royal stables. A wide path was first cleared in the jungle along which the elephant was taken to a river where a floating house waited to receive him. The house had a straw roof and was draped all round with red hangings. The journey was long and fatiguing. When the elephant wanted to rest, troupes of singers and dancers entertained him. When he landed, he stepped on to a carpet interlaced with gold. He was bathed in water scented with jasmine. Then he was given a huge quantity of rice flour cakes and sugarcane to eat. The king, the courtiers and the priests had gone all the way to receive him. On arrival at Bangkok, the elephant was taken into a well-decorated pandal, ceremoniously rubbed with oils and adorned with chains of gold. Then for nine days the populace made offerings to him and worshipped him before he was taken in a procession to the royal stables.
In August 1996, a white elephant was the victim of a mishap. He was being taken to the USA as a present to President Johnson from the Government of Thailand. In the boat he broke away and became disorderly. As a result the boat sank. White elephants are sometimes found in the jungles of Burma. Here also they once used to receive the same ceremonious welcome that is accorded to them in Thailand. Princes and courtiers were in attendance on them. They were fastened to their posts with ropes made of red silk. They were given food in gold and silver troughs.

1 Most people read and hear regularly about the importance of staying healthy and living longer through diet and exercise. While it‖s efinitely smart to follow that advice, you can do something else to help keep your mind and body in optimum condition. Connect with a critter — it goes a long way toward making you happy and healthy.
2 Studies have shown that forming a relationship with an animal can have important health and psychological benefits. Owning a pet or interacting regularly with animals can lower humans‖ blood pressure, reduce anxiety and depression, and increase their social interaction. People who have dogs also tend to get more exercise from regular walks.
3 It doesn‖t really matter what kind of pet you have, whether it‖s a cat or a dog, a fish or a ferret, an iguana or a horse. What‖s important is developing a relationship with an animal. Having a pet often provides people with a reason for enjoying life and connecting with others. This can be especially critical for older adults, who sometimes get socially isolated or struggle with finding a sense of purpose. It commonly happens after seniors retire, their spouses die, their children and grandchildren grow up, or their families move away.
4 Owning a pet serves as a wonderful way to rediscover a sense of purpose. It helps people feel needed and wanted. After all, most people can‖t help but smile when their dog greets them with its tail wagging or their cat curls up cozily on their lap.
