7- Long Answer Type Questions:

(i) Write and explain the components of blood.
Answer-
(1) Red Blood Cells (RBC’s)- These are disc shaped cells which are red in colour. RBC’s contain haemoglobin which helps in transportation of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
(2) White Blood Cells (WBC’s)- These are colourless and irregular in shape. They fight against germs.
(3) Platelets- These are the smallest cells in the blood. They help in clotting of blood during injuries.
(4) Plasma- It is the liquid part of blood which is yellowish in colour. Its major component is water.

(ii) Describe the functions of heart.
Answer- Heart pumps the blood in the body. Heart receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs in the left auricle. Then the left auricle contracts and blood enters left ventricle. When the left ventricle contracts, the blood is pumped out to the body.
Deoxygenated blood from the body comes to the right auricle. Then the right auricle contracts and blood enters right ventricle. Right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs through pulmonary arteries for the exchange of gases. Heart has valves which prevent blood from flowing back.

(v) Explain the transportation of substances in plants.
Answer-
(1) Transportation of water and minerals- Transpiration creates a suction pressure, as a result of which water is forced into the xylem cells of the roots. Then there is a steady movement of water from the root xylem to all the plant parts through the interconnected water - conducting channels.
(2) Transportation of food- Phloem transports food materials from the leaves to different parts of the plant body by utilizing energy. This is helpful in moving materials according to the needs of the plant.
(3) Osmosis- Root hairs of plant uptake water from soil via osmosis.
