Summary

In this poem, a young man discusses why a person falls in love, i.e. what determines it. According to them, a person is not loved for his basic nature but because of his/her physical feature, i.e., outward physical appearance. It is not possible to love one for oneself. Only God can do so.

The poem ‘For Anne Gregory’ by W.B. Yeats is a poem of eighteen lines in all. In this poem, the poet addresses young Gregory and tells her that her hair is of the same colour as honey and when it falls, the poet begins to think of her beauty being spell bound. Her hair is so beautiful that every man falls in love with her. At this, Gregory gives response to the poet that man loves her only for her outward beauty while this outward appearance may change at any time. At this, the poet proclaims it a truth since time immemorial that man can not easily judge a woman other than her looks. He tells Anne that she can never be ugly inward or outward even if she wishes to be so.

इस कविता में, एक युवक चर्चा करता है कि एक व्यक्ति प्यार में क्यों पड़ता है, यानी यह क्या निर्धारित करता है। उनके अनुसार, किसी व्यक्ति को उसके मूल स्वभाव के लिए नहीं बल्कि उसकी शारीरिक विशेषता, यानी बाहरी शारीरिक बनावट के कारण प्यार किया जाता है। किसी को अपने लिए प्यार करना संभव नहीं है। केवल भगवान ही ऐसा कर सकते हैं।

कविता ‘फॉर ऐनी ग्रेगरी’ डब्ल्यू.बी. येट्स कुल मिलाकर अठारह पंक्तियों की कविता है। इस कविता में, कवि युवा ग्रेगरी को संबोधित करता है और उसे बताता है कि उसके बाल शहद के समान रंग के हैं और जब वह गिरता है, तो कवि उसकी सुंदरता को मंत्रमुग्ध करने लगता है। उनके बाल इतने खूबसूरत हैं कि हर कोई उनका दीवाना हो जाता है। इस पर ग्रेगरी कवि को जवाब देती है कि मनुष्य उसे केवल उसकी बाहरी सुंदरता के लिए प्यार करता है जबकि यह बाहरी रूप कभी भी बदल सकता है। इस पर, कवि अनादि काल से इसे एक सत्य घोषित करता है कि पुरुष आसानी से किसी अन्य महिला को उसके रूप के अलावा नहीं आंक सकता। वह ऐनी से कहता है कि वह कभी भी अंदर या बाहर कुरूप नहीं हो सकती, भले ही वह ऐसा चाहती हो।
