⚠️ UPTET is a TET - Not a Job Recruitment Exam
Qualifying UPTET makes you eligible to apply for UP government teaching jobs - it does NOT directly give you a job. After UPTET, candidates must separately appear for SUPER TET (UP Primary recruitment exam) for actual teacher appointments. UPTET = eligibility; SUPER TET = job.
📋 UPTET 2026 Exam Dates: 2, 3, 4 July 2026
UPTET 2026 exam officially scheduled for 2nd, 3rd and 4th July 2026. Conducted by UPESSC (Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission). Check updeled.gov.in or upbasiceduboard.gov.in for admit card and updates.
✅ No Negative Marking - Attempt All Questions
UPTET has absolutely no negative marking. Wrong answers cost nothing. This means you should attempt all 150 questions - eliminate obvious wrong options and make an educated guess on uncertain questions. Never leave a question blank.
UPTET tests Child Development and Pedagogy, Languages, Mathematics and EVS/Social Studies. Practice each section below - Child Development and Pedagogy is common to both papers and the most important section.
📋 Child Development and Pedagogy is 20% of UPTET and the most important section: 30 of 150 questions in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 come from Child Development and Pedagogy. This is the highest-scoring section since all candidates write the same pedagogy questions (unlike subject-specific sections where difficulty varies by topic). Strong pedagogy preparation - Piaget, Vygotsky, Bloom, NCF 2005, NEP 2020, RTE Act, inclusive education - gives a decisive advantage.
🗺️ UPTET vs SUPER TET - The UP Teacher Hiring Pipeline
Understanding the two-step process is essential. UPTET gives eligibility; SUPER TET gives the actual job. Both are separate exams with separate preparations.

Career Path
Clear UPTET → Eligible for SUPER TET → Clear SUPER TET → Appointment as Assistant Teacher in UP Primary Schools
💡 Think of UPTET as a qualifying round and SUPER TET as the actual competition: Clearing UPTET with 90/150 marks gives you the same eligibility certificate as someone who scored 130/150. UPTET marks themselves do NOT determine who gets teaching jobs in UP. The actual rank and job allocation happens through SUPER TET merit. Therefore, while you must clear UPTET's 60% threshold, the preparation effort should be proportional - once you secure the UPTET certificate, focus preparation on SUPER TET for the actual government teacher appointment.

ℹ️ UPTET is a pass/fail exam, not a competitive merit exam. The qualifying threshold is 90/150 for General category. However, strong scorers (110-130+) are better positioned for SUPER TET since it uses merit. Score as high as possible in UPTET to build a strong base for SUPER TET preparation. Past pass rates of 15-18% show that nearly 80-85% of UPTET candidates fail to qualify, making serious preparation essential despite no negative marking.
💡 Expert Preparation Tips
From our faculty who have guided thousands of UPTET candidates to successful qualification across multiple cycles
1
Attempt all 150 questions - no negative marking means blanks cost you marks - UPTET has absolutely no negative marking. An unattempted question gives you 0 marks; a guessed question has a 25% chance of giving you 1 mark. With 150 questions and no penalty, the expected value of guessing is +0.25 marks per question. This means every blank question left is a strategic error. After completing questions you know, use the remaining time to mark the most plausible option for every uncertain question. Many candidates who know 85+ questions correctly still fail to qualify because they leave 20-30 questions blank from uncertainty, ending up with 87-90 marks while the same knowledge with full attempts would give 95-100+. Never submit with blank answers.
2
Child Development and Pedagogy (30 questions) gives the highest ROI of all sections - The Child Development and Pedagogy section is 20% of UPTET's total marks and the most preparation-sensitive section. Unlike subject sections where difficulty varies based on which specific NCERT chapter questions come from, Pedagogy has a consistent syllabus (Piaget, Vygotsky, Bloom, NCF 2005, NEP 2020, RTE Act, learning theories) that can be mastered completely with 3-4 weeks of focused study. Candidates who score 27-28 out of 30 in Pedagogy versus those scoring 18-20 have a 7-10 mark advantage that often makes the difference between passing and failing. Invest proportionally - at least 25-30% of preparation time in Child Development and Pedagogy.
3
NCERT textbooks for the relevant classes are the primary source - not coaching notes - UPTET questions are based explicitly on NCERT/UP Board textbooks for the relevant class range. For Paper 1, study NCERT Maths and EVS textbooks for Classes 1-5 thoroughly - note examples, chapter headings, important concepts and activities. For Paper 2 Maths-Science, study NCERT Class 6-8 Maths and Science textbooks. For Social Studies, NCERT Class 6-8 History, Geography and Social Science textbooks. Questions are often directly taken from NCERT exercises or based on diagrams and information in NCERT chapters. Candidates who rely only on coaching summaries without reading NCERT consistently miss 5-8 questions that require textbook-level familiarity.
4
Hindi section requires genuine grammar preparation - not just reading comprehension - Language I (Hindi) carries 30 questions in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 - 20% of the total marks. Hindi grammar topics tested include Sandhi (Vyanjan and Swar), Samas (compound words), Karak (case markers), Ras-Chand-Alankaar (poetic elements), Muhavare (idioms), Lokoktiyan (proverbs), antonyms, synonyms, and passages with comprehension questions. Many candidates from non-Hindi-medium backgrounds or those who studied English-medium treat Hindi as a weak section and score only 16-20 out of 30. With focused preparation on Hindi grammar (standard Class 10 grammar book covers 90% of what is tested), scoring 24-26 out of 30 is realistic. Do not skip Hindi preparation.
5
Prepare for SUPER TET simultaneously with UPTET - the syllabi overlap significantly - SUPER TET (UP Assistant Teacher Recruitment) is the actual exam that gives you the government teaching job after UPTET. The SUPER TET syllabus includes all UPTET topics plus additional subjects: General Knowledge, Science, Maths (at Class 8 level), Hindi Language, Sanskrit or English (Language II), Environment and Social Studies, Teaching Methods and Skills, Child Psychology, Information Technology, Life Skills Management and Aptitude, and Current Affairs. The UPTET core preparation (Child Development, Hindi, Languages, EVS/Maths) covers 60-70% of SUPER TET topics. Start SUPER TET preparation alongside UPTET - add the additional SUPER TET subjects (GK, Current Affairs, IT, Life Skills) while finishing UPTET preparation.
6
Appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 if eligible - double your employment opportunities - Candidates who are eligible for both Paper 1 (12th pass + D.El.Ed) and Paper 2 (Graduate + B.Ed) should appear for both in the same UPTET cycle. Qualifying both papers gives you a UPTET certificate valid for teaching positions in Classes 1-5 (Paper 1) and Classes 6-8 (Paper 2) separately. This significantly expands your options for SUPER TET applications and future UP teaching job vacancies since you can apply to vacancies across two different class ranges. The additional preparation needed is mainly for the subject-specific section of Paper 2 - the common sections (Pedagogy, Hindi, Language II) are identical for both papers. Application for both papers in one cycle also costs less than applying separately in future cycles.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - UPTET 2026
Most searched questions about UPTET eligibility, exam pattern, validity and post-UPTET career path answered
No - passing UPTET does NOT give you a government teaching job. UPTET is a Teacher Eligibility Test that certifies you are eligible to apply for teaching posts in UP government primary and upper primary schools. It is a qualifying examination only. The actual job recruitment happens through a separate exam called SUPER TET (officially the UP Primary Education Teacher Selection Examination), conducted by UP Basic Shiksha Parishad. To get an actual government teacher appointment in UP, you must: (1) Clear UPTET to get the eligibility certificate, and then (2) Apply for SUPER TET when vacancies are notified, clear that competitive exam, and be selected based on SUPER TET merit. UPTET marks do not contribute to teacher appointment merit - only SUPER TET marks determine final selection and posting.
The UPTET certificate is now valid for lifetime - it does not expire. This change was made effective 2021-22, changing the earlier rule under which UPTET certificates expired after 5 years. This means if you qualified UPTET in 2017, 2019, or any previous cycle, your certificate remains valid and can be used for any current or future SUPER TET applications and UP Basic Shiksha Parishad teacher recruitment drives. There is no need to re-appear for UPTET if you have already qualified it in a previous cycle - unless you want to improve your score (which does not affect your teacher appointment since UPTET marks do not count in final job selection anyway). However, always verify the current validity rules from the official notification since government rules can be amended.
The eligibility for UPTET Paper 1 has evolved with court judgments and government orders. As per the NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) norms which govern teacher eligibility, a standard B.Ed degree (2-year) now makes holders eligible for both primary (Class 1-5) and upper primary (Class 6-8) teaching positions in most states. However, the specific UP state rules and UPTET notifications may have additional requirements or different interpretations. Recent UPTET notifications have generally included B.Ed graduates as eligible for Paper 1. But the key requirement is that D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) holders specifically trained for primary school teaching are the ideal qualification for Paper 1. Always check the specific official UPTET 2026 notification for the exact eligibility criteria, as this has been subject to changes through court orders and government policy updates.
Both UPTET and CTET qualify candidates for UP government school teaching jobs, but with important distinctions. CTET is accepted as an equivalent qualification to UPTET for teacher eligibility in UP, but UPTET specifically also qualifies you for UP state government school posts. The UP government has accepted CTET holders as eligible for SUPER TET applications when UPTET-equivalent qualifications are listed. However, for certain UP state-specific teacher recruitment drives that explicitly mention UPTET as the required TET, a CTET alone may not always suffice - check each specific SUPER TET notification. Ideally, if you are targeting UP government school teaching as your primary career goal, qualifying both CTET and UPTET covers all bases and is a stronger combined profile. If you have already cleared CTET, consider appearing for UPTET as well since the preparation overlaps significantly.
If you score less than 60% (90/150 for General category, 55% for reserved categories), you have not qualified UPTET in that attempt. You can appear for UPTET again in the next cycle with no restrictions on the number of attempts. There is no maximum attempt limit for UPTET - candidates can keep appearing until they qualify. Unlike competitive exams where age is the only barrier, UPTET only requires that you be within the eligible age range. Since UPTET is held periodically (not necessarily every year - there was a gap between UPTET 2019 and 2021), it is important to not treat any cycle casually assuming you can just appear again next year. The intervals between UPTET cycles can be 2-3 years. Prepare seriously for each attempt. With no negative marking and only 60% qualifying threshold, strong NCERT-based preparation covering all 5 sections (especially Child Development and Pedagogy) should comfortably clear the qualifying mark.

The UPTET (Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test) 2026 is conducted by UPESSC (Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission) to certify teachers as eligible for UP government primary and upper primary school teaching positions. UPTET 2026 exam dates: 2, 3, 4 July 2026. UPTET has two papers: Paper 1 (for Classes 1-5 teaching, primary level) and Paper 2 (for Classes 6-8 teaching, upper primary level). Each paper has 150 questions, 150 marks, 2 hours 30 minutes, with absolutely no negative marking. Qualifying marks: 60% (90/150) for General/EWS category and 55% (82-83/150) for OBC/SC/ST/PwBD. The UPTET certificate is now lifetime valid - it no longer expires after 5 years as per the revised rule. Critical clarification: UPTET is a Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), NOT a job recruitment exam. Qualifying UPTET only grants an eligibility certificate; actual government teacher appointments happen through the separately conducted SUPER TET exam.
