SSC CGL - The Gateway to Central Government Officer Posts
SSC CGL is the single largest recruitment exam for central government gazetted and non-gazetted officer posts. A good Tier 2 score can land you in the Income Tax Department, CBI, Ministry of Finance, or CAG - with full government benefits, 7th Pay Commission salary, pension, housing, and the prestige of a central government posting. Over 17,000 candidates are selected every cycle across 50+ central government departments and ministries.
📊 Tier 1 - Qualifying Round Exam Pattern
Tier 1 is qualifying only - these marks do NOT count in your final merit. You must clear the cut-off to reach Tier 2.

⚠️ Important: Tier 1 has NO sectional time limit - all 4 sections share 60 minutes. Negative marking is 0.50 marks per wrong answer (higher than most banking exams). Tier 1 marks are NOT added to the final merit list - only your Tier 2 score determines your rank and post allotment.
🏆 Tier 2 - Merit-Based Round Exam Pattern
Tier 2 is where your rank is decided. Paper 1 is compulsory for all posts. Your Tier 2 score alone determines your post allotment.

🔒 Sectional Time Lock: Section I (Math + Reasoning) and Section II (English + GK) each have a strict 1-hour timer. You cannot move to the next section early or borrow time from another section. Section III (Computer + DEST) is qualifying - marks do not count in merit.
⚠️ Negative Marking in Tier 2: Math and Reasoning sections carry 3 marks per question with 1 mark deducted per wrong answer. English and GK carry 3 marks per question with 0.25 marks deducted. Never guess in Math and Reasoning - the penalty is steep.
💡 English carries 35% of Tier 2 merit marks (135 out of 390). This is the highest weightage of any single module in SSC CGL Tier 2. Candidates who invest heavily in English accuracy and speed gain a massive advantage over peers who focus only on Mathematics. A 10-mark difference in English is worth more than a 10-mark difference in any other section.

📚 SSC CGL Syllabus - High-Weightage Topics
Tier 2 syllabus is deeper than Tier 1 - Advanced Math, high-level Reasoning, and strong English are the three pillars
🔢
Quantitative Aptitude (Mathematical Abilities)
🔥 50 Marks Tier 1 | 90 Marks Tier 2 (Section I)
Arithmetic Topics
  • Percentage, Profit and Loss, Discount
  • Ratio and Proportion, Partnership
  • Time and Work, Pipes and Cisterns
  • Simple and Compound Interest
  • Speed, Distance and Time
  • Average, Mixture and Alligation
Advanced Topics (Tier 2 Heavy)
  • Algebra - Identities, Linear Equations
  • Geometry - Triangles, Circles, Polygons
  • Trigonometry - Ratios, Heights and Distances
  • Mensuration - 2D and 3D shapes
  • Statistics and Probability (New in Tier 2)
💡 Pro Tip: Tier 2 Math is significantly harder than Tier 1. Geometry, Trigonometry, and Mensuration together account for 30-40% of Tier 2 Math questions. These topics need dedicated preparation - they cannot be skipped.
🧩
General Intelligence and Reasoning
🔥 50 Marks Tier 1 | 90 Marks Tier 2 (Section I)
Tier 1 Topics (Easy-Moderate)
  • Analogy, Classification, Series
  • Coding-Decoding
  • Blood Relations, Direction Sense
  • Venn Diagrams, Syllogism
  • Matrix, Word Formation
Tier 2 Topics (Higher Difficulty)
  • High-level Puzzles and Seating Arrangements
  • Data Sufficiency
  • Statement and Conclusions
  • Critical Reasoning
  • Input-Output (complex patterns)
💡 Pro Tip: SSC CGL Tier 2 Reasoning is harder than Tier 1 but still easier than banking Mains Reasoning. Puzzles and Seating Arrangements dominate Tier 2 - practise complex multi-variable puzzles daily.
📝
English Language and Comprehension
🔥 50 Marks Tier 1 | 135 Marks Tier 2 - Highest Weightage (35%)
  • Reading Comprehension (Multiple passages in Tier 2)
  • Cloze Test

  • Spelling Correction
  • Error Detection and Sentence Improvement
  • Fill in the Blanks

💡 Pro Tip: English carries 135 out of 390 marks in Tier 2 - the single highest section. Candidates who score 120+ in English and 70+ in Math consistently crack Tier 2. Invest more time in English than any other subject in Tier 2 preparation.
🌍
General Awareness
🔥 50 Marks Tier 1 | 75 Marks Tier 2 (Section II)
Static GK (High Weightage)
  • History - Ancient, Medieval, Modern India
  • Geography - India and World Physical Geography

  • General Science - Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Class 10 level)
  • Economy - GDP, Inflation, Budget highlights
  • Government Schemes and Policies
  • Awards, Sports, Books and Authors
💡 Pro Tip: SSC CGL GK has a much stronger Static GK component than banking exams. History and Polity alone can account for 30-40% of GK questions in Tier 1. Build a strong static GK base alongside current affairs.

💡 Expert Tips - Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
From our faculty who have trained thousands of SSC CGL successful candidates
1
Tier 1 is qualifying - never over-prepare for it at the cost of Tier 2 - The most damaging mistake in SSC CGL preparation is spending 6-8 months solely on Tier 1 topics and then having insufficient time for Tier 2. Tier 1 is qualifying - your marks there do not appear on the final merit list. A score of 150 and a score of 175 in Tier 1 lead to exactly the same outcome if both cross the cut-off. Focus 40% of your total preparation time on Tier 2-level topics from the very beginning, especially Advanced Math (Geometry, Trigonometry, Algebra) and English.
2
English is the highest-scoring section in Tier 2 - treat it as your primary subject - English Language and Comprehension carries 135 out of 390 merit marks in Tier 2 - that is 35% of the entire exam. Most SSC aspirants with a science or commerce background underinvest in English and consistently score in the 80-90 range when they could score 115-125 with targeted preparation. Read one English newspaper editorial daily, practise RC passages under time pressure, and build vocabulary through consistent word lists. Gaining 20 marks in English is significantly easier than gaining 20 marks in Advanced Math.
3
The Sectional Time Lock in Tier 2 requires a completely different exam strategy - Tier 2 has a strict 1-hour lock for Section I (Math + Reasoning) and a separate 1-hour lock for Section II (English + GK). You cannot borrow time or skip ahead. Candidates who practise full mock tests without this constraint are in for a shock on exam day. From your first Tier 2 mock test, always simulate the sectional time lock. Within Section I, practise allocating roughly 35 minutes to Math and 25 minutes to Reasoning. Within Section II, allocate 45 minutes to English and 15 minutes to GK.
4
Static GK is far more important in SSC CGL than in banking exams - SSC CGL GK tests deep static knowledge of History, Geography, Polity, Culture, and General Science - topics that are barely covered in banking exam GK preparation. Candidates who switch from banking exams to SSC CGL without rebuilding their GK approach consistently score 30-35 out of 75 in Tier 2 GK when they should be targeting 55-60. Build separate notes for Ancient, Medieval, and Modern India; Indian and World Geography; and Indian Polity chapters. General Science at Class 10 level is also heavily tested and is almost entirely static.
5
Negative marking is heavier in Tier 2 Math and Reasoning - never guess blindly - Tier 2 Math and Reasoning carry 3 marks per correct answer but 1 mark deducted per wrong answer - a 4-mark swing per question. In contrast, English and GK carry 3 marks per correct answer with only 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer. This asymmetry means blind guessing in Math and Reasoning can destroy a good score. Skip questions you are uncertain about in Math and Reasoning, and attempt English and GK questions more liberally since the negative marking penalty there is much lower.
6
Post preference strategy matters as much as your score - SSC CGL final selection is based on your Tier 2 score and the post preferences you fill during document verification. Candidates with the same score can get very different postings based on their preference order. Research each post thoroughly before filling preferences - consider the city of posting, work nature, promotion speed, and additional perks. ASO in MEA gives international exposure, Income Tax Inspector gives field posting allowances, and Assistant Audit Officer in CAG gives the fastest promotion track among SSC CGL posts. Do not fill preferences randomly.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - SSC CGL 2026
Most searched questions about SSC CGL answered by our experts
SSC CGL salary depends on the post allotted. Most Group B posts (ASO, AAO) fall in Pay Level 7 (Rs.44,900 Basic Pay) or Level 8 (Rs.47,600), while Group C posts (Auditor, JSO) are in Level 5 or Level 6 (Rs.29,200 - Rs.35,400). The gross salary including DA, HRA (city-dependent at 8%, 16%, or 27%), Transport Allowance, and other Central Government allowances ranges from Rs.50,000 to Rs.75,000+ per month depending on post and city. All posts come with 7th Pay Commission benefits, Old or New Pension Scheme, medical benefits (CGHS), LTC, and housing (GPRA) wherever available. Income Tax Inspectors additionally receive field posting allowances.
SSC CGL and SBI PO are different in nature rather than one being universally harder. SSC CGL Tier 2 has a much stronger Advanced Math component (Geometry, Trigonometry, Mensuration, Algebra) which is not tested in banking exams at all. SSC CGL also tests deep Static GK (History, Geography, Polity, Science) which banking exams barely cover. On the other hand, SBI PO has more complex Reasoning Puzzles and a Descriptive paper. SSC CGL has no interview, which is a key advantage. Candidates with a strong Math background from 12th standard and a good static GK base find SSC CGL easier; candidates with better current affairs and verbal ability find banking exams more manageable.
The answer depends on what you prioritise. For salary and career growth: Assistant Audit Officer (AAO) in CAG is Pay Level 8 - the highest basic pay in SSC CGL - with a fast promotion track to Audit Officer (Gazetted). For prestige and international exposure: ASO in MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) is considered the most prestigious posting, with opportunities for foreign postings. For field work and allowances: Income Tax Inspector and Inspector (Central Excise) offer field posting allowances on top of regular salary. For work-life balance: ASO in non-field ministries is considered comfortable. Most toppers prefer AAO or ASO as their first preference.
SSC CGL has no official attempt limit - you can appear every year as long as you are within the age limit. The age limit for most posts is 18-32 years for General category (up to 35 years for OBC, up to 37 years for SC/ST). This means a 21-year-old graduate can potentially appear 11 times before aging out. However, unlike banking exams which may be held twice a year, SSC CGL is typically notified once a year. The exam cycle (notification to final result) takes 12-18 months, so strategic preparation over 2-3 dedicated attempts with targeted gap analysis between attempts is the most effective approach.
Both are qualifying tests in Tier 2 Section III - their marks do NOT count in the final merit list. Computer Knowledge Test (CKT) is a 20-question, 60-mark objective test on basic computer concepts - MS Office, Internet, Operating Systems, and Hardware. You simply need to clear the qualifying cut-off (typically around 33%). Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) requires candidates to type a given passage in English on a computer at a speed of 2000 key depressions per hour for 15 minutes. This test is compulsory for Tax Assistants and some other posts. Candidates who cannot type at this speed should practise regularly - it is easy to clear with 2-3 weeks of daily typing practice.
Yes - with some important adjustments to your preparation strategy. The common topics between SSC CGL and banking exams (IBPS PO, SBI PO) are English Language, Basic Reasoning, and Arithmetic. These overlap completely and dual preparation for these topics is efficient. The key differences are: SSC CGL additionally requires Advanced Math (Geometry, Trigonometry, Algebra, Mensuration) and deep Static GK which banking exams do not test; banking exams require complex Puzzle Reasoning and Data Interpretation which SSC CGL does not emphasise. Candidates targeting both should build the common foundation first, then spend dedicated time on SSC-specific Advanced Math and banking-specific Puzzle Reasoning separately. Many successful candidates clear both in the same year with 8-10 months of disciplined preparation.
No - SSC CGL has no interview since 2016. The final merit list is prepared entirely based on Tier 2 marks. Before 2016, SSC CGL had an interview stage for Group B posts. The removal of the interview has made SSC CGL a fully objective, merit-based exam where your written score alone determines your post and posting location. This is a significant advantage over banking officer exams (SBI PO, IBPS PO) which still have interviews. For candidates who perform well in written exams but find interviews stressful, SSC CGL is a highly attractive option.
