⚠️ Part B is qualifying only for ALP - minimum 35% marks required. Part B tests your ITI trade syllabus at ITI or Diploma level. You must score at least 35% (26.25 out of 75) to qualify - but these marks are NOT added to the Part A merit score. Candidates who fail Part B cannot proceed to CBAT even if their Part A score is high. The trade syllabus matches the ITI trade you qualified in.
🖥️ Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) - Stage 3 for ALP Only
CBAT is mandatory for ALP candidates only. Technician candidates do not appear for CBAT.
🎯 What CBAT Tests
  • Memory: Short-term and working memory assessment
  • Attention and Concentration: Ability to maintain focus over time
  • Spatial Ability: Understanding of 2D and 3D spatial relationships
  • Perceptual Speed: Speed of identifying patterns and differences
  • Psychomotor Ability: Hand-eye coordination and reaction time
  • Information Ordering: Following rules to arrange items in order
📋 CBAT Structure
  • Administered on a computer with specially designed test batteries
  • Scored on a T-Score scale (not raw marks)
  • Candidates must secure a minimum qualifying T-Score
  • CBAT scores are NOT added to CBT 2 Part A merit
  • Duration: approximately 60 minutes total across all batteries
  • No negative marking in CBAT
🚂 Why ALP Needs CBAT

The CBAT assesses whether a candidate has the cognitive and perceptual abilities required to safely operate locomotives. An ALP must maintain alertness over long shifts, react quickly to signals, process visual information from the track ahead, and make split-second decisions at speed. These abilities cannot be assessed through a written exam - the CBAT specifically measures the psychological and neurological fitness for train operations. Candidates who fail CBAT cannot be appointed as ALP regardless of their written exam score.

💡 How to Prepare for CBAT
  • Practise memory games and concentration exercises daily
  • Solve spatial reasoning puzzles - mental rotation, pattern recognition
  • Use reaction time training apps to improve psychomotor speed
  • Play strategy games that require sustained attention
  • Practise official RRB sample CBAT questions when available
  • Good sleep and low stress improve CBAT performance significantly
ALP final merit is based on CBT 2 Part A score only - after passing Part B (35% qualifying) and CBAT (minimum T-Score). The highest CBT 2 Part A scorers who clear both Part B and CBAT are selected in order of merit.
🔧 Basic Science and Engineering - The Core Technical Section

Running Allowance - The Hidden Pay Booster for ALP
ALP and Loco Pilot posts receive a special Running Allowance paid per kilometre operated. An ALP operating 3,000-4,000 km per month (typical) earns Rs.8,000-12,000 extra per month in running allowance alone - significantly boosting gross salary beyond what basic pay + DA + HRA suggests. A Senior Loco Pilot operating 5,000+ km per month can earn Rs.15,000-20,000 in running allowance on top of regular salary. This makes the ALP career path one of the highest-earning technical railway roles at entry level.

💡 Expert Tips - Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
From our faculty who have trained thousands of RRB ALP successful candidates
1
Basic Science and Engineering is 40% of CBT 2 Part A - make it your strongest subject - BSE carries 40 out of 100 marks in CBT 2 Part A - more than Math (25) and Reasoning (25) combined. Yet most candidates spend 70% of their CBT 2 study time on Math and Reasoning out of habit from other exams. Candidates who have studied their ITI trade properly are at a massive natural advantage here. Revise your ITI trade theory books from Year 1 and Year 2 thoroughly. Focus specifically on Engineering Drawing interpretation, basic electricity (Ohm's Law, circuit calculations), and mechanical concepts (levers, work, power) - these appear in every ALP BSE paper.
2
CBT 1 is 75 questions in 60 minutes - speed training is critical - RRB ALP CBT 1 gives you only 48 seconds per question on average across all subjects. This is the fastest-paced of all the RRB and SSC exams covered on this site. Every mock test you attempt must be under strict 60-minute conditions. In CBT 1, General Science (20 questions) and GK (10 questions) are typically faster to attempt than Math - develop a question-order strategy that maximises your attempted count. Practise answering 30 questions in 20 minutes in daily timed drills for all subject types.
3
CBT 2 Part B requires minimum 35% - do not ignore it - Part B tests your ITI trade syllabus at a deeper level and requires a minimum 35% score to qualify for CBAT. Many candidates who score well in Part A are disqualified at Part B because they have not revised their trade theory in years. Even though Part B marks are not added to merit, failing it ends your ALP selection. Revise your complete ITI trade theory - both theory and practical knowledge - as Part B questions can come from any chapter in the ITI curriculum for your trade.
4
Prepare for CBAT from Day 1 - not as an afterthought - Many candidates treat CBAT as an afterthought to be dealt with after clearing CBT 2. This is a mistake. CBAT tests cognitive abilities - memory, attention, spatial reasoning, and psychomotor speed - that respond to training over weeks, not days. Daily practice of memory games, spatial puzzles, and concentration exercises from the start of your preparation builds the cognitive foundation for CBAT. Candidates who start CBAT preparation only in the final week before the test consistently underperform compared to those who have built the habit over months.
5
Check your medical eligibility for ALP before applying - eyesight standards are strict - ALP is a safety-critical post and carries an A2 medical standard for vision - including normal colour vision and specific visual acuity requirements. Candidates who wear glasses or have colour vision deficiency may be disqualified at the medical stage. Additionally, ALP requires good hearing as the role involves responding to auditory signals in the cab. Get a full eye examination including colour vision test and a hearing test before investing months in ALP preparation. If you do not meet ALP medical standards, focus on Technician posts which have less strict medical requirements.
6
Running Allowance makes ALP one of the highest-earning Level 2 posts - understand its value - Many candidates undervalue ALP because the basic pay (Level 2, Rs.19,900) appears low compared to posts like Station Master (Level 6, Rs.35,400). But the running allowance changes this picture completely. An ALP running 3,500 km per month earns approximately Rs.10,000-12,000 in running allowance on top of regular salary - bringing effective monthly compensation to Rs.42,000-50,000+ at the ALP level itself. As a Senior Loco Pilot running 5,000+ km per month, total monthly compensation can exceed Rs.70,000-80,000. Never evaluate ALP on basic pay alone - running allowance is a permanent, recurring, and significant income component throughout the career.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - RRB ALP 2026
Most searched questions about RRB ALP answered by our experts
RRB ALP joins at Pay Level 2 with a Basic Pay of Rs.19,900 per month. The gross salary including DA (46%), HRA, and Transport Allowance is approximately Rs.30,000-36,000 per month. However, the critical addition is the Running Allowance - a per-kilometre payment for operating trains. An ALP running 3,000-4,000 km per month earns Rs.8,000-12,000 in running allowance on top of gross salary - bringing total monthly compensation to Rs.38,000-48,000+ at the entry level. As a Senior Loco Pilot (Level 6, Rs.35,400 Basic Pay), with higher running allowance for operating faster and longer-distance trains, total monthly compensation can reach Rs.70,000-80,000+. All railway benefits - free travel passes, subsidised housing, free medical, NPS pension - apply on top of this.
RRB ALP accepts a wide range of ITI trades. The most common eligible trades include Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Wireman, Fitter, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Diesel Mechanic, Mechanic (Refrigeration and Air Conditioning), Instrument Mechanic, Mechanic (Radio and TV), Armature and Coil Winder, Electrical Engineering, and several others. Diploma and Degree holders in Engineering branches like Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Automobile, Computer Science, and Information Technology are also eligible. The official notification for each cycle lists all eligible trades and engineering branches - always verify your specific qualification against the latest notification before applying. The Part B trade syllabus in CBT 2 is based on your specific ITI trade or engineering branch.
ALP career progression is one of the most defined paths in Indian Railways. After joining as ALP (Level 2), the candidate undergoes a probation period and initial training at a Loco Training Centre. After completing required service and passing internal route learning and traction knowledge tests, the ALP is promoted to Loco Pilot (Goods) (Level 5) which involves operating freight trains. Further promotion leads to Loco Pilot (Mail/Express) (Level 6) for passenger trains, then Senior Loco Pilot (Level 6), and finally Loco Supervisor / Loco Foreman (Level 7) - a supervisory role managing the loco crew at a depot. Each promotion comes with a significant pay jump and higher running allowance rates. The time from ALP to Loco Supervisor typically takes 15-20 years with good performance.
Yes - diploma and degree holders in relevant engineering branches are eligible for RRB ALP. The eligibility specifically states: 10th pass + ITI in relevant trade, OR 10th pass + Act Apprenticeship in relevant trade, OR Diploma in relevant engineering branch, OR Degree in relevant engineering branch. Diploma and degree holders apply under the same exam but their Part B in CBT 2 is based on their engineering branch curriculum rather than ITI trade syllabus. Engineering diploma/degree candidates who apply for ALP are often at an advantage in Part B since their curriculum is more comprehensive. However, for Technician Grade III posts, a trade-specific ITI is generally required - check post-wise eligibility in the official notification.
Yes - there is significant syllabus overlap between RRB ALP CBT 1 and RRB Group D CBT. Both test Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Science, and General Awareness at broadly similar difficulty levels. The common preparation for these subjects is efficient for both exams. The key differences are: RRB ALP CBT 1 has only 75 questions in 60 minutes (faster pace than Group D's 90 minutes for 100 questions); ALP has no PET (physical test) while Group D requires PET; ALP has the additional CBT 2 with Basic Science and Engineering and trade-specific Part B which has no equivalent in Group D. Candidates targeting both should treat the common GK, Reasoning, and basic Math preparation as shared, then add the BSE and trade-specific preparation separately for ALP CBT 2.
RRB ALP has no official attempt limit. You can appear in every recruitment cycle as long as you are within the age limit of 18-28 years for General category (up to 31 years for OBC, up to 33 years for SC/ST). The age window for General category is narrower than other RRB exams - only 10 years - so it is important to start preparing as soon as you have the required qualification (ITI or equivalent). RRB ALP and Technician notifications typically align with general RRB recruitment cycles and are released once in 2-4 years. The most recent major cycle was 2018 with over 26,000 vacancies. Never miss applying when a notification is released given the narrow age window.
ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot) and Loco Pilot are different grades in the same career track. You join as an ALP - this is the entry-level post recruited through this exam. As an ALP, you assist the main Loco Pilot in operating the locomotive, handle the rear cab on goods trains, and undergo route learning and traction knowledge training. After completing required service and clearing the internal promotion examination, you are promoted to Loco Pilot (Goods) where you independently operate freight trains. Further promotion to Loco Pilot (Mail/Express) allows you to operate passenger trains including Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express. The distinction matters for salary - ALP is Level 2 while Loco Pilot (Goods) is Level 5 - but the career path is continuous and the same person progresses through all these grades.
