NDA - The Most Prestigious Entry into India's Armed Forces
NDA is the only entry route that allows Class 12 students to join the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force as officer trainees. The 4-year programme (3 years at NDA + 1 year service academy) produces some of India's finest military officers. NDA alumni include Chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Commissioned officers receive Level 10 pay (Rs.56,100 Basic Pay) immediately after commissioning - plus Military Service Pay of Rs.15,500/month and numerous tax-free allowances - making it one of the highest-paying and most respected careers available to a 12th pass candidate in India.
📊 Written Exam - Overall Pattern
The written exam has 2 papers. Paper 1 is Mathematics only. Paper 2 is the General Ability Test covering English, Physics, Chemistry, and GK.

⚠️ SSB cannot be "cracked" with last-minute preparation. The 5-day assessment is designed to reveal your genuine personality, not test cramming. SSB success requires real-life leadership experience, genuine confidence, clear communication, and honest self-awareness developed over months and years. Start working on your personality, communication, and current affairs awareness from the day you decide to target NDA - not from the day you receive your written exam result.

Officer Pay - Far More Than Basic Pay Suggests
A commissioned officer's gross compensation is significantly higher than the basic pay - Military Service Pay (Rs.15,500/month), Transport Allowance, Field Area Allowance (for border postings), Flying Pay (Air Force pilots), Sea Duty Allowance (Navy), Kit Maintenance Allowance, and free accommodation make the effective package Rs.90,000 - Rs.1,20,000+ per month at the Lieutenant level. All these allowances are in addition to tax exemptions for military personnel - making the net take-home significantly higher than similarly paid civilian government employees.
📚 GAT Syllabus - Subject-wise Topics
Paper 2 GAT covers 6 subjects. English and Physics together carry 300 out of 600 marks - make these your top priorities.
📝
English (Part A)
🔥 50 Questions - 200 Marks - Highest Single Subject in GAT

🎯 Our Recommendation: If you are in Class 11-12 with strong Math and Physics and aspire to the armed forces, NDA is your best route. It gives you the longest career (since you join at 16.5-19.5 vs 19-25 for CDS) and the full NDA training experience which is the gold standard for officer development. If you have already graduated, CDS gives you all three services with a less math-intensive written exam. Always prepare for NDA as early as Class 11 - the Math and Physics preparation for NDA also significantly boosts performance in JEE/Board exams.
📈 UPSC NDA Previous Year Cut-off Marks

ℹ️ Written cut-off is typically around 340-370 out of 900 (38-41%). Final cut-off (written + SSB) is typically around 680-710 out of 1800 (38-40%). The written and SSB together are equally weighted - a strong SSB can compensate for a moderate written score and vice versa. Target 400+ in written for a comfortable buffer above the cut-off. Data is indicative - always refer to official UPSC notifications for exact figures.
💡 Expert Tips - Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
From our faculty who have trained thousands of NDA successful candidates
1
Mathematics is half the written exam - treat it as your primary subject from Class 11 - Paper 1 Mathematics carries 300 out of 900 written marks. GAT Part A English carries another 200 marks. Together these two subjects account for 556 marks out of 900 written (62%). Most NDA aspirants neglect Math and then scramble to cover it in the final 2 months. NDA Math is at Class 11-12 level - Calculus, Vectors, Matrices, Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry, and Probability. This cannot be learned in weeks - it requires the full 2-year Class 11 and 12 foundation. Start NDA Math preparation in Class 11 itself - your board preparation and NDA Math preparation should happen simultaneously.
2
English is 200 marks in GAT - the single highest-value subject after Math - English (200 marks) is the highest-scoring subject in Paper 2 GAT - more than Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, and Current Events combined (except Physics at 100 marks). Yet many NDA aspirants with a science background spend 80% of GAT preparation on Physics and Chemistry and very little on English. Strong English - Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary - is the fastest way to improve your GAT score. Read one English newspaper editorial daily and practise RC passages under time conditions. A 20-mark improvement in English is more achievable than a 20-mark improvement in any other GAT subject.
3
Negative marking is steep in NDA - never guess blindly - NDA uses 1/3 negative marking, but because each correct answer in GAT gives 4 marks, a wrong answer costs 1.33 marks - creating a 5.33-mark swing per question. In Paper 1 Math, each correct answer gives 2.5 marks and a wrong answer costs 0.83 marks - a 3.33-mark swing. This makes blind guessing extremely costly. Only attempt questions where you can eliminate at least 2 of the 4 options. In Math, never guess if you have no idea about the approach - in GAT, you can attempt English and GK questions where you can narrow down options more easily.
4
SSB preparation must start at least 6 months before your expected SSB date - SSB is a 5-day personality and leadership assessment that evaluates 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs). These qualities - initiative, cooperation, decision-making, social adaptability, courage - cannot be faked or crammed. They are assessed through multiple psychological tests, group tasks, and personal interview over 5 days by trained assessors. Building genuine OLQs requires real-life experience - taking leadership roles in school/college, participating in group activities, reading newspapers for current affairs, developing hobbies, and practicing clear verbal expression. Start reading about SSB structure, attempt mock psychological tests, and work on your communication skills from well before the written exam.
5
NDA Math and Physics preparation simultaneously strengthens JEE / Board performance - This is a unique advantage of NDA preparation that few aspirants exploit. The NDA Math syllabus (Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Vectors, Statistics) is almost identical to the Class 11-12 Board and JEE Mains syllabus. The NDA GAT Physics syllabus closely mirrors Class 11-12 NCERT Physics. Preparing for NDA from Class 11 effectively means preparing for your Board exams and JEE simultaneously - with the added benefit of appearing for a prestigious national defence exam. Students who target NDA from Class 11 typically perform better in Board exams because of the additional rigor of NDA preparation.
6
Appear for both NDA I and NDA II - do not wait for a perfect score - NDA is conducted twice a year - NDA I in April and NDA II in September. Many students wait until they feel "fully prepared" and miss NDA I, losing one of their two annual attempts. The SSB experience from an early attempt is invaluable for subsequent attempts - SSB assessors recommend that even if you clear the written but fail SSB in your first attempt, the experience dramatically improves your performance in the second attempt. Never skip an NDA examination for which you are age-eligible. Apply for both NDA I and NDA II every year within your eligible age window - which is only a 3-year window (16.5 to 19.5 years).
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - UPSC NDA 2026
Most searched questions about UPSC NDA answered by our experts
NDA cadets receive a stipend of approximately Rs.56,100 per month during training. After commissioning as a Lieutenant (Army), Sub-Lieutenant (Navy), or Flying Officer (Air Force), the pay structure is: Basic Pay Rs.56,100/month (Pay Level 10) + Military Service Pay Rs.15,500/month + allowances. The total gross compensation including Transport Allowance, HRA or free accommodation, Field Area Allowance (for border postings), Kit Maintenance Allowance, and other service-specific allowances ranges from Rs.90,000 to Rs.1,20,000+ per month at the Lieutenant level. Air Force pilots additionally receive Flying Allowance (Rs.25,000+/month). Many military allowances are also tax-exempt, making the net take-home significantly higher than similarly paid civilian roles. As officers progress to Captain, Major, and Colonel levels, the pay and allowances increase substantially.
Yes - female candidates can now apply for UPSC NDA following the Supreme Court of India's landmark judgment in 2022. Prior to 2022, NDA was open only to male candidates. The Supreme Court directed UPSC to include female candidates in NDA recruitment, and female candidates have been eligible since the NDA II 2021 examination. Female candidates must meet the same eligibility criteria as male candidates (12th pass with Physics and Math for Navy and Air Force wings, any stream for Army wing). The age limit and educational qualification requirements are identical. Physical and medical standards may differ for female candidates - check the latest official UPSC notification for specific requirements applicable to female candidates for each NDA cycle.
Not for all wings. Physics and Mathematics in Class 12 are compulsory for Navy Wing, Air Force - Flying Branch, and Air Force - Ground Duties (Technical Branch). For Army Wing and Air Force - Ground Duties (Non-Technical Branch), any stream at Class 12 is acceptable - you do not need Physics and Math. However, since Paper 1 of the NDA written exam is entirely Mathematics at Class 11-12 level, candidates without a Math background will find Paper 1 significantly harder. Even Army wing aspirants are strongly advised to have a strong Math foundation to score competitively in Paper 1 which carries 300 out of 900 written marks.
The National Defence Academy at Khadakwasla (Pune) provides a 3-year residential training programme that is equally physically, academically, and character-building intensive. The training covers: Academic Education - cadets earn a B.Sc (Computer Science, Physics, or Mathematics stream) or B.Tech degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU); Military Training - drill, weapon handling, map reading, fieldcraft, leadership exercises, and obstacle courses; Physical Training - swimming, equestrian, boxing, athletics, and various sports; Service Specific Training - preliminary orientation to the Army, Navy, or Air Force that the cadet will join; and Social and Cultural Development - mess etiquette, music, debates, and developing officer temperament. Cadets receive a monthly stipend, free accommodation, meals, uniform, and medical care during the 3-year period.
UPSC NDA has no official attempt limit - but the age window effectively limits attempts to 6. NDA is open to candidates aged 16.5 to 19.5 years. Since NDA is held twice a year (April and September), a candidate who starts appearing at 16.5 years can potentially attempt NDA up to 6 times before aging out at 19.5. In practice, most candidates appear for NDA during Class 12 (2 attempts) and a gap year if needed (2 more attempts). The narrow age window means every attempt counts - never skip an NDA cycle for which you are eligible. After aging out of NDA (above 19.5 years), graduates can target CDS (Combined Defence Services) which has a higher age limit (up to 25-27 years depending on wing).
NDA is for Class 12 students; CDS is for graduates. Both lead to commissioned officer positions in the armed forces at the same starting rank and pay. The key differences: NDA candidates join the forces at a younger age (18-19 after NDA training begins) which means a longer career and potentially reaching senior ranks earlier. NDA provides a 3-year residential training at NDA Khadakwasla earning a degree - so NDA cadets effectively earn an engineering or science degree while training to be officers. CDS written exam is easier (only Class 10 Math) while NDA written is harder (Class 11-12 Math and Physics). If you are currently in Class 11 or 12 with good Math and Physics, always target NDA first. If you have already graduated, CDS is the appropriate route. Many aspirants who miss NDA due to age then appear for CDS - both are excellent careers.
NDA medical standards are among the strictest of any competitive exam in India, particularly for the Air Force Flying branch. Key requirements: Eyesight - 6/6 uncorrected distance vision in both eyes for Air Force Flying; 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other for Army; corrected vision acceptable for some roles with specific limits. Colour Vision - normal colour vision required for flying duties. Height - minimum 157 cm for Army and Air Force; 157 cm for Navy. Weight - proportionate to height as per military norms. General - no flat feet, no varicose veins, no deformity of limbs, good hearing, no speech impediment, no history of major illness or surgery. The medical examination is conducted after SSB recommendation - candidates who fail medically can apply for a Review Medical Board. Always get a comprehensive medical check-up before targeting NDA flying branch to identify any potential disqualifying conditions early.
