The Indian Navy SSR (Senior Secondary Recruit) and MR (Matric Recruit) exams are two of the most sought-after defence recruitment opportunities in India under the Agnipath Scheme. SSR is designed for 10+2 pass candidates with Physics and Mathematics, leading to technical sailor roles in the Indian Navy. MR is designed for Class 10 pass candidates and leads to service roles like Chef, Steward and Sanitary Hygienist. Both SSR and MR Agniveers serve for 4 years with monthly packages from Rs.30,000 to Rs.40,000, receive a tax-free Seva Nidhi corpus of approximately Rs.11.71 lakh on exit, and the top 25% are retained as permanent regular Navy sailors with full pension benefits.
The SSR exam pattern has 100 multiple choice questions in 60 minutes covering English Language (25 marks), Science - Physics, Chemistry and Biology (25 marks), Mathematics (25 marks) and General Awareness (25 marks) - all at Class 11 and 12 NCERT level - in English medium only. The MR exam pattern has 50 questions in 30 minutes covering Science and Mathematics combined (25 marks) and General Awareness (25 marks) - at Class 10 level - in bilingual Hindi and English. Both exams carry 0.25 negative marking.
