📋 MPTET - Madhya Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test - Varg 1, 2 and 3

MPTET 2026 - Varg 3, Varg 2 and Varg 1 - Mock Tests, Syllabus and Exam Pattern

Complete guide for MPTET (Madhya Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test) conducted by MPESB for government teaching positions in Madhya Pradesh. Three levels: Varg 3 (Primary, Classes 1-5), Varg 2 (Middle School, Classes 6-8) and Varg 1 (High School, Classes 9-10). Varg 3 has a two-stage system: TET (eligibility, 100 marks) followed by Mains (recruitment, 150 marks). No negative marking in Varg 3 TET and Mains. Varg 2 has -0.25 negative marking. Qualifying: 60% for General, 50% for reserved categories. Free chapter-wise mock tests, Varg-wise exam patterns, MP-specific GK and expert tips.

🔄 Varg 3 Has Two Stages: TET Then Mains
Unlike other state TETs, MPTET Varg 3 works in two stages. First clear the TET (100 marks, 2 hours, no negative) to get eligibility. Then appear for the Mains (150 marks, 2.5 hours, no negative) which is the actual recruitment exam. Both have no negative marking.
⚠️ Varg Numbering is Counterintuitive
In MPTET, Varg 1 = High School (Classes 9-10) - the most qualified teacher post. Varg 2 = Middle School (Classes 6-8). Varg 3 = Primary (Classes 1-5) - the entry-level post. Higher Varg number = lower class level taught. This is opposite to what you might expect.
✅ Varg 2 Has -0.25 Negative Marking
Unlike Varg 3 (no negative), MPTET Varg 2 deducts 1 mark for every 4 wrong answers (-0.25 per wrong). Do not apply the same "attempt all" strategy across Varg 2 and Varg 3 - the strategies differ.
🎯 Practice Mock Tests - Subject-wise
MPTET tests Child Development and Pedagogy (Mains), Languages, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. Varg 2 also tests GK and Reasoning. Practice below.

📋 Varg 3 Mains has Child Development and Pedagogy (30 questions) as the most important single section - it's 20% of the Mains marks and the most preparation-sensitive. No negative marking in Varg 3 means attempt all 150 questions. Varg 2 has -0.25 negative - be selective about uncertain questions.
⚖️ Varg 1 vs Varg 2 vs Varg 3 - Complete Comparison
Important: In MPTET, higher Varg number means lower class level. Varg 3 = primary teachers, Varg 2 = middle school, Varg 1 = high school. Choose based on qualification level.

💡 MPTET Varg numbering explained: The "Varg" (class/grade) system counts from the highest qualification down - Varg 1 requires the highest qualification (post-graduation for some subjects) and teaches the highest classes (9-10). Varg 3 is the entry-level primary teacher post. Many candidates get confused thinking Varg 1 is the easiest or primary - it is actually the most advanced teacher grade in MPTET.
📊 MPTET Varg 3 - Primary Teacher (Classes 1-5) - TET and Mains Pattern

💡 Expert Preparation Tips
From our faculty who have guided thousands of MPTET Varg 3, Varg 2 and Varg 1 candidates to successful selection
1
Varg 3 Mains is the actual job exam - TET is only the eligibility gate - prepare for Mains from Day 1 - Many Varg 3 aspirants focus intensely on the TET (100 marks, 2 hours) which is only the eligibility qualifier. The actual merit list and appointment happens through the Mains (150 marks, 2.5 hours). While the TET has no negative marking and 5 subjects of 20Q each (simpler to clear with 60% threshold), the Mains has a more structured 5-section pattern including Child Development and Pedagogy which is not in the TET. Start Mains preparation alongside TET preparation from Day 1 - particularly Child Development and Pedagogy (30Q, not tested in TET) and EVS (structured differently from Science/Social Science in TET). Both TET and Mains have no negative marking so attempt all questions in both stages.
2
Madhya Pradesh-specific GK is critical for Varg 2 and Varg 1 - standard national GK books are insufficient - The GK and Reasoning section in Varg 2 (40 marks = 27% of total) includes significant Madhya Pradesh-specific content: MP history, Narmada river, Satpura/Vindhya ranges, MP wildlife parks (Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench), MP culture (Gond painting, Chanderi silk, Maheshwari sarees, Rai dance), MP polity (MPSC, High Court at Jabalpur, Ladli Behna Yojana), and MP current affairs. Prepare a dedicated MP GK note covering geography, history, culture, economy and government. Standard GK books designed for SSC or banking exams miss most of this. Use MP-specific MPTET coaching books and the MP government's official websites for current affairs.
3
Attempt ALL questions in Varg 3 (TET and Mains) - no negative marking means blanks waste marks - Both the Varg 3 TET (100 marks) and Mains (150 marks) have no negative marking whatsoever. A blank answer gives 0 marks and a wrong answer also gives 0 marks - there is no penalty. The mathematically correct strategy is to always attempt every question. For uncertain questions, eliminate the most obviously wrong option and guess from the remaining choices. This approach gives a 25-33% expected return versus 0% for blanks. Many Varg 3 candidates following advice from Varg 2 preparation material (which has -0.25 negative) leave questions blank unnecessarily in Varg 3 - this is a strategic error that costs points. Fill in every OMR circle in Varg 3.
4
Varg 2 subject section (40 marks) combined with GK-Reasoning (40 marks) determines your rank - In Varg 2, Subject-specific (40Q) and GK-Reasoning (40Q) together carry 80 of 150 marks = 53% of total. When candidates from the same subject stream all have similar subject knowledge, the GK-Reasoning section becomes the differentiator since it is common to all streams and tests preparation breadth. Candidates who invest time in both subject mastery AND MP-focused GK-Reasoning preparation consistently outperform those who focus only on their teaching subject. With -0.25 negative marking in Varg 2, be selective: attempt subject questions where you are 70%+ confident and GK-Reasoning questions where you can eliminate at least one option.
5
MP Board textbooks are as important as NCERT for MPTET - don't ignore them - MPTET questions reference Madhya Pradesh Board textbooks in addition to NCERT, especially for Varg 3 Maths and Science (Class 1-5 MP Board curriculum) and Varg 2 Subject section (Class 9-12 MP Board at graduation level). The MP Board curriculum includes examples, case studies and local context that NCERT does not. Access Madhya Pradesh Board textbooks from mpbse.mponline.gov.in. Key difference: MP Board Social Studies includes substantial Madhya Pradesh history and geography not in NCERT Class 6-8 - this is particularly important for Varg 3 TET's Social Science section (20Q) and Varg 2's Social Science subject option.
6
CTET and MPTET Varg 3 Mains preparation overlaps 80% - prepare for both simultaneously - MPTET Varg 3 Mains has the same five sections as CTET Paper 1 (Child Development, Language I Hindi, Language II English, Maths, EVS) with essentially the same content. The only significant additions in MPTET are Madhya Pradesh-specific EVS content and state education policy. Candidates preparing for MPTET Varg 3 who also want eligibility for KVS, NVS or central government schools should appear for CTET Paper 1 using the same preparation. The incremental effort is only to add Madhya Pradesh-specific content for MPTET and remove it for CTET. CTET certificates are also sometimes accepted for Varg 3 eligibility in MPTET Mains applications - check each specific notification.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - MPTET 2026
Most searched questions about MPTET Varg 1, 2 and 3 eligibility, exam pattern and career path answered
MPTET uses a Varg (grade/class) system where higher Varg number means lower class level: Varg 3 = Primary Teacher for Classes 1-5; Varg 2 = Middle School Teacher for Classes 6-8; Varg 1 = High School Teacher for Classes 9-10. Which Varg you should appear for depends on your educational qualification and which class level you want to teach. Varg 3 requires 12th pass + D.El.Ed/B.El.Ed/B.Ed and is for primary school teaching. Varg 2 requires graduation with B.Ed and is for middle school. Varg 1 requires graduation or post-graduation with B.Ed and is for high school teaching. The salary increases from Varg 3 to Varg 1 as the qualification requirement increases. If you hold a B.Ed and a relevant graduate degree, you can potentially appear for both Varg 2 and Varg 3 (if your D.El.Ed or B.Ed meets Varg 3 eligibility).
MPTET Varg 3 has a two-stage system because primary school teaching in MP uses a TET-first-then-recruitment model. The TET (Teacher Eligibility Test, 100 marks, 2 hours, 5 subjects of 20Q each - Hindi, English, Maths, Science, Social Science) is the eligibility gate - candidates must score 60% (General) or 50% (reserved) to qualify. Once you have a valid Varg 3 TET certificate, you can apply for the Mains examination when MPESB announces vacancies. The Mains (150 marks, 2.5 hours, 5 sections of 30Q each - Child Dev and Pedagogy, Hindi, English, Maths, EVS) is the actual recruitment exam with merit-based selection. The Mains includes Child Development and Pedagogy which is NOT in the TET - this is the biggest content difference between the two stages. Both stages have no negative marking.
In many MPTET Varg 3 Mains cycles, a valid CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) Paper 1 certificate has been accepted as equivalent to MPTET Varg 3 TET certificate for applying to the Mains examination. This means candidates who have cleared CTET Paper 1 (for Classes 1-5) may be eligible to apply for MPTET Varg 3 Mains without specifically clearing the MPTET Varg 3 TET. However, this acceptance varies by specific notification cycle - some cycles explicitly list CTET 2018 onwards or specific MPTET cycles as accepted. Always verify this in the specific official Varg 3 Mains notification from MPESB before assuming CTET substitutes MPTET TET. Candidates who have cleared CTET Paper 1 should check the latest Varg 3 Mains notification and apply if CTET is listed as an accepted eligibility qualification.
MPTET is not conducted on a strict annual schedule - notifications depend on the state government's teacher vacancy requirements. However, Madhya Pradesh has been actively recruiting teachers with multiple MPTET cycles in recent years. The 2025 cycle included Varg 3 TET (October 2025, 13,089 vacancies) and Varg 3 Mains (August 2025, 10,150 vacancies). Varg 2 had 10,757 vacancies announced in early 2025. There is no formal attempt limit for MPTET. MPTET TET certificates typically have a validity period (check current notification - it has been 5 years in some cycles and lifetime in others). Monitor esb.mp.gov.in (MPESB) and mponline.gov.in for new MPTET notifications. Given that MP has very large numbers of government school teacher vacancies, MPTET cycles tend to be frequent compared to some other state TETs.
After selection through MPTET Varg 3 Mains, candidates are appointed as Primary Teachers (Classes 1-5) in Madhya Pradesh government schools at Pay Level 5 (Rs.25,300 basic). Career progression within Varg 3 happens through annual increments and MACP (Modified Assured Career Progression) promotions at 10, 20 and 30 years of service. For inter-Varg promotion (Varg 3 to Varg 2), teachers typically need to meet the educational qualification requirements for Varg 2 (graduate with B.Ed in relevant subject) and either appear in a competitive MPTET Varg 2 examination or qualify through departmental promotion processes. This is not automatic and depends on state government rules. Teachers who already hold a graduate degree and B.Ed before joining Varg 3 are technically eligible to apply for Varg 2 examinations separately. The MP government periodically announces Varg 2 vacancies where Varg 3 teachers can apply if they meet Varg 2 eligibility, treating it as a fresh application rather than an internal promotion.

MPTET 2026 - Varg 1, Varg 2 and Varg 3 Complete Guide: Exam Pattern, Syllabus, MP GK, Qualifying Marks and Free Mock Tests

The MPTET (Madhya Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test) is conducted by MPESB (Madhya Pradesh Employees Selection Board) for government school teaching positions in Madhya Pradesh in three levels: Varg 3 (Primary Teacher, Classes 1-5), Varg 2 (Middle School Teacher, Classes 6-8) and Varg 1 (High School Teacher, Classes 9-10). Important: Higher Varg number = lower class level - Varg 1 is the most senior teacher post requiring highest qualification. MPTET Varg 3 has a unique two-stage system: TET (100 MCQs, 100 marks, 2 hours, no negative marking) covering Hindi, English, Maths, Science and Social Science (20Q each) followed by Mains (150 MCQs, 150 marks, 2.5 hours, no negative marking) covering Child Development and Pedagogy, Hindi, English, Mathematics and EVS (30Q each).
