📋 CTET is Mandatory for PRT and TGT
A valid CTET score is compulsory - CTET Paper I for PRT, CTET Paper II for TGT. Without CTET, your application is rejected. CTET is NOT required for PGT posts.
📚 Pedagogy = 50 Questions in Tier I
Education and Leadership (Pedagogy) carries 50 of 100 questions in Tier I - the largest section. Most candidates underinvest here. NCF 2005, NEP 2020 and child development are high-weight topics.

PRT requires D.El.Ed (2-year Diploma in Elementary Education - like NIOS D.El.Ed or SCERT equivalents), or B.El.Ed (4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education), or B.Ed Special Education. Many B.Ed graduates mistakenly apply for PRT and get rejected. If you have only a B.Ed, apply for TGT or PGT based on your qualification level.

ℹ️ Cut-offs are indicative estimates from coaching institute data. Tier I cut-offs vary by post and subject. At +3/-1, scoring 160+ in Tier I (General) with strong pedagogy scores (aim for 40+ out of 50 questions) is a realistic shortlisting target. Tier II subject-specific scores and demo teaching are the true merit determinants.
💡 Expert Preparation Tips
From our faculty who have guided hundreds of KVS PRT, TGT and PGT successful candidates
1
Pedagogy is 50% of Tier I and is the biggest differentiator - invest proportionally - Education and Leadership carries 50 questions and 150 marks out of 300 in KVS Tier I - more than all other five sections combined. Yet most candidates spend the majority of their preparation time on General Awareness, Reasoning and English which are only 10 questions each. This is a fundamental strategic mistake. Candidates who score 42-45 out of 50 in Pedagogy versus those who score 30-35 have a 30-45 mark advantage from this single section alone, easily determining Tier I shortlisting. Invest 50% of your Tier I preparation time in Pedagogy - child development theories (Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg), learning theories (Bloom, Skinner, Bruner), NCF 2005, NEP 2020, RTE Act, and inclusive education.
2
Tier II subject knowledge determines your final rank - NCERT books are the backbone - For PGT, Tier II questions test your Master's level subject knowledge applied to the school teaching context. For TGT, they test graduation-level knowledge of your subject. In practice, NCERT textbooks for Classes 6-12 (for TGT) and Classes 11-12 (for PGT) form the primary question source alongside some higher-level conceptual questions. Candidates who thoroughly study NCERT textbooks from cover to cover for their subject - noting examples, definitions, diagrams and chapter summaries - score significantly higher in Tier II than those who rely only on coaching notes. Beyond NCERT, standard graduation/post-graduation textbooks for your subject are required for conceptual depth questions that go beyond school-level content.
3
CTET must be cleared before applying for PRT or TGT - get it done if you haven't - CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) is a mandatory eligibility requirement for PRT (Paper I) and TGT (Paper II). Without a valid CTET score, your KVS application for PRT or TGT is rejected. CTET is conducted by CBSE twice a year (typically July and December). If you are targeting KVS PRT or TGT and have not yet cleared CTET, prioritise the next CTET cycle immediately. There is no minimum CTET score required for KVS - passing marks (60% for General, 55% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD in most cases) are sufficient. CTET preparation is highly compatible with KVS preparation since both test pedagogy, child development and subject knowledge in similar frameworks.
4
Demo teaching (interview round) requires genuine preparation - it contributes 15% to final merit - The demo teaching session in KVS is not a formality. 15% of your final merit score comes from the interview and demo teaching panel. Candidates who prepare a well-structured, interactive 5-7 minute lesson plan for their subject using constructivist teaching methods, student engagement techniques, blackboard organisation, and knowledge of the specific KV class level they are applying for will score significantly higher than those who walk in unprepared. Practice your demo in front of a mirror or mock panel. Know the KVS curriculum structure for the classes you will teach. Panel members also ask questions about NEP 2020 implementation, your subject's connection to real-world applications, and how you would handle learning difficulties.
5
Hindi preparation is compulsory for all candidates - do not neglect it - KVS Tier I has a dedicated General Hindi section (10 questions, 30 marks) and the interview/demo teaching round requires proficiency in both Hindi and English. Many English-medium educated candidates from non-Hindi-speaking states treat Hindi as a throwaway section and lose 20-30 marks that they would easily have gained with 2-3 weeks of focused preparation. Standard Class 10 Hindi grammar - Sandhi, Samas, Karak, Tenses, Muhavare and Lokoktiyan, Ras-Chand-Alankaar - covers 80% of what is tested. KVS operates across India including in regions where Hindi is the primary medium, so proficiency in Hindi is genuinely expected at the interview stage as well.
6
Tier I -1 negative marking requires high accuracy strategy - do not attempt all questions - KVS Tier I has +3 per correct and -1 per wrong. Three wrong answers completely cancel one correct. At 100 questions, a candidate who attempts 80 questions with 70 correct and 10 wrong scores 70×3 - 10×1 = 200 marks. A candidate who attempts all 100 with 65 correct, 35 wrong scores 65×3 - 35×1 = 160 marks - 40 marks less despite attempting 20 more questions. In Tier I, accuracy beats volume. Focus on the Pedagogy section (50 questions) where preparation directly determines accuracy - aim for 40+ correct. For Reasoning, English and GK, attempt only questions you are confident about and leave uncertain ones blank.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - KVS Recruitment 2025-26
Most searched questions about KVS PRT TGT PGT recruitment, CTET and eligibility answered by our experts
No - a regular B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) degree alone does NOT make you eligible for KVS PRT posts. PRT (Primary Teacher) requires either D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education - a 2-year programme offered by NIOS, SCERT and state education departments) or B.El.Ed (Bachelor of Elementary Education - a 4-year integrated programme offered by DU and select institutions) or B.Ed Special Education. This distinction exists because PRT teaching is focused on Classes 1-5, and the D.El.Ed and B.El.Ed programmes specifically train teachers for early childhood and elementary pedagogy. A regular B.Ed trains teachers for secondary-level teaching and is NOT considered equivalent for primary teaching purposes. If you hold only a B.Ed, you are eligible for TGT (graduate level teaching, Classes 6-10) or PGT (post-graduate level teaching, Classes 11-12) depending on your academic qualification.
CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) is mandatory for KVS PRT (CTET Paper I) and KVS TGT (CTET Paper II). It is NOT required for PGT, Principal, Vice Principal or any non-teaching posts. After the 2019-20 cycle, CTET became a lifetime valid qualification - it no longer expires every 7 years. This means any CTET certificate you hold from any cycle (2019 onwards) is permanently valid for applying to central government teaching posts. CTET is conducted by CBSE typically twice a year (July and November/December). The passing score is 60% (90 out of 150) for General category and 55% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD. There is no minimum CTET score above the passing threshold required for KVS - only whether you passed or not matters for eligibility.
KVS 2025-26 uses a two-tier system. Tier I is a 100-question, 300-mark screening CBT common to all posts, with -1 negative marking and 2 hours duration. Based on Tier I performance, top candidates in a 1:10 ratio per category per post are shortlisted for Tier II. Tier II is a 70-question, 100-mark subject-specific test (OMR pen-and-paper, 2.5 hours, -0.25 negative marking). After Tier II, candidates are called for interview and demo teaching. Final merit is calculated as: 85% weightage from Tier II marks + 15% weightage from interview and demo teaching marks. Critically, Tier I marks are NOT included in the final selection merit - Tier I only determines who gets to appear for Tier II. A candidate must clear Tier I to enter Tier II, but their Tier I score itself has no direct bearing on the final rank.
Candidates can apply for different subjects in KVS only if they meet the eligibility criteria for each subject. For example, a PGT applicant with an MSc Physics and B.Ed can apply for PGT Physics. If the same candidate also has a relevant qualification for PGT Chemistry, they can apply separately for that subject as well - but they would need to appear for separate Tier II exams for each subject. The Tier I exam, being common to all posts, needs to be taken only once per cycle. In practice, the KVS notification specifies whether multiple applications are allowed within the same cycle - check the specific notification rules. Most candidates apply for only one post and subject based on their primary academic specialisation.
KVS (Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan) runs Kendriya Vidyalayas - central government schools established primarily near central government offices, defence establishments and in educationally underserved areas. NVS (Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti) runs Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas - residential schools in rural areas with a focus on meritorious rural students. In the 2025-26 cycle, CBSE conducted the written examination jointly for both KVS and NVS - candidates could apply to both using a single application. The exam pattern, syllabus, Tier I and Tier II structure were common. After exam results, separate merit lists are prepared for KVS and NVS. Candidates can be allocated to either organisation based on their post preference and merit rank. The service conditions, transfer policies and work culture of KVS and NVS differ - KVS has a broader pan-India network with more urban schools, while NVS focuses on rural residential schools with a closer teacher-student community.

KVS PRT TGT PGT Recruitment 2025-26 - Complete Guide: Two-Tier Exam Pattern, Pedagogy Syllabus, Eligibility, CTET and Free Mock Tests

The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) Recruitment 2025-26 under Notification 01/2025, conducted by CBSE, announced 9,921 vacancies for teaching and non-teaching posts including 1,606 Post Graduate Teachers (PGT), 3,069 Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT), 3,630 Primary Teachers (PRT), 161 Principals, 69 Vice Principals and 1,207 non-teaching staff. The new two-tier system has Tier I as a common CBT (100 questions × 3 marks = 300 marks, 2 hours, -1 negative marking) covering General Reasoning (10Q), General Awareness (10Q), General English (10Q), General Hindi (10Q), Computer Literacy (10Q) and Education and Leadership/Pedagogy (50Q - 150 marks). Top candidates in 1:10 ratio per category are shortlisted for Tier II (70 questions, 100 marks, 2.5 hours, -0.25 negative marking) which is subject-specific for PGT and TGT, and child development and pedagogy-focused for PRT. Final merit = 85% Tier II + 15% Interview/Demo Teaching. Tier I was held 10-11 January 2026; Tier II (PGT) on 29 March 2026.

Critical eligibility notes: CTET Paper I is mandatory for PRT, CTET Paper II for TGT - CTET is NOT required for PGT. A regular B.Ed degree does NOT qualify for PRT - PRT requires D.El.Ed, B.El.Ed or B.Ed Special Education. Pay scales under 7th CPC: PRT at Level 6 (Rs.35,400+), TGT at Level 7 (Rs.44,900+), PGT at Level 8 (Rs.47,600+). KVS teachers are central government employees with DA, HRA, CGHS medical, LTC, NPS pension and 6-week paid summer vacation. The Pedagogy section covering Piaget, Vygotsky, Bloom's Taxonomy, NCF 2005, NEP 2020, RTE Act, constructivist learning and inclusive education is the single most important section - 50% of Tier I marks and also heavily tested in Tier II for PRT posts.

Our free KVS mock tests cover the key general aptitude sections tested in KVS Tier I - General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Knowledge and Awareness, English Language and General Studies - available topic-wise at zero cost at StudiesToday.com. For subject-specific Tier II preparation, NCERT textbooks for Classes 6-12 (TGT) and Master's-level textbooks (PGT) are the primary resources.
