Qualifying only - marks NOT counted in merit. Negative marking: 1/3 mark deducted per wrong answer. 5 options per question - Option E means intentional skip (no negative marking for E). General category cut-off: approximately 95-110 marks.
⚠️ Critical - 2026 Prelims Features
  • 5 options per question (A, B, C, D, E) - unique to BPSC
  • Option E = intentional skip - no marks deducted for E
  • 1/3 negative marking for wrong attempts (A, B, C or D)
  • Prelims is qualifying only - score not in merit
  • Cut-off for General: approximately 95-110 out of 150
  • Only Bihar domicile matters for many posts - check notification
  • Strong Bihar-specific content - 15-20 questions per exam
  • Medium: Hindi and English both available
💡 Option E strategy: If you cannot eliminate at least two of the four answer options, shade Option E instead of guessing. Guessing from 4 options with 1/3 negative marking has a negative expected value. Use Option E as a deliberate tool, not a sign of weakness.
📝 Mains Exam Pattern - Updated for 2026
Major 2026 change: Optional paper is now qualifying only - marks NOT counted in merit. Final merit = Essay (300) + GS I (300) + GS II (300) + Interview (120) = 1020 marks.

⚠️ Key 2026 Change: The Optional Subject (Paper V) is now objective type and qualifying only - its 300 marks are NOT added to your merit total. Final merit is based on Essay (300) + GS I (300) + GS II (300) + Interview (120) = 1020 marks total. Candidates who chose optional subjects based on expected high scoring need to revisit their strategy - the Essay paper now directly shapes your final rank.

⚠️ Essay carries 300 of 900 Mains marks. Candidates who ignore essay practice and rely only on GS typically lose 40-60 marks to well-prepared peers. That gap is very hard to recover in the interview. Write at least 2-3 essays per week from 3 months before Mains.

📈 Previous Year Cut-off Marks
Prelims cut-offs are for the qualifying stage only. Final selection is based on Mains and Interview scores.
Exam CyclePrelims Cut-off GEN (out of 150)Prelims Cut-off BC/EBCPrelims Cut-off SC/STRemark
67th CCE92 - 9882 - 8872 - 78No negative marking in this cycle
68th CCE95 - 10284 - 9074 - 80Higher cut-off due to larger applicant pool
69th CCE97 - 10485 - 9276 - 82Negative marking introduced

71st CCE (Est.)100 - 10888 - 9578 - 84With 1/3 negative marking; net score based
ℹ️ Cut-offs are indicative estimates. With 1/3 negative marking, the effective target score requires more correct answers - aim for 115-120 correct attempts leaving 30-35 questions to Option E rather than guessing. BPSC does not officially publish Prelims cut-off marks - final selection notice reveals the cutoff indirectly.
💡 Expert Preparation Tips
From our faculty who have guided hundreds of BPSC successful candidates to final selection
1
Bihar GK is not optional - it is the margin that separates ranks - BPSC is fundamentally different from UPSC in one critical way: Bihar-specific content is tested at every level, in every paper. Prelims has 15-20 questions on Bihar history, geography, economy and culture. GS Mains papers require Bihar-specific analysis in answers about agriculture, governance, socioeconomic issues and public policy. Even essay topics often have a Bihar angle. Candidates who treat BPSC like a UPSC preparation with Bihar topics as an afterthought consistently underperform. Build a dedicated Bihar GK notebook covering Magadha history, Bihar geography (rivers, districts), government schemes (Saat Nishchay), culture (Chhath, Madhubani) and current affairs from Bihar newspapers.
2
Option E is a strategy, not a weakness - use it in Prelims to protect your score - BPSC Prelims has 1/3 negative marking with 5 options where Option E explicitly means "not attempted" with zero marks deducted. This is designed to let you skip questions you are uncertain about without penalty. The optimal strategy is: attempt questions where you are confident OR where you can eliminate 2+ of the 4 options (your expected value becomes positive). For the remaining questions, shade Option E. Do not leave blank rows - a blank row and Option E have the same outcome but a blank row creates ambiguity. Aim for 90-100 confident attempts aiming for 105-115 correct to safely clear the cut-off rather than attempting 140+ with 30-40 guesses.
3
The Essay paper is 300 of 900 Mains marks - treat it as a core subject, not an afterthought - This is the most underestimated aspect of BPSC Mains preparation. Many candidates who prepare thoroughly for GS I and GS II invest no time in essay writing practice and lose 40-60 marks to well-prepared competitors in the Essay paper. Those 40-60 marks are nearly impossible to recover in an interview of only 120 marks. Write at least 2 full essays per week for 12-14 weeks before Mains. Get each essay evaluated by a mentor or peer. Focus on structure - a clear introduction, 4-5 well-argued paragraphs with examples, a Bihar-relevant perspective wherever possible, and a crisp conclusion. Practice writing 600-800 words per essay in 55-60 minutes.
4
Optional subject strategy has completely changed in 2026 - marks are not counted in merit - Until recent cycles, candidates would choose optional subjects based on expected marks and use them to boost their Mains total. From 2026, the Optional Paper (Paper V) is now objective type and qualifying only - its 300 marks are NOT added to the merit total at all. The only merit papers are Essay (300) + GS I (300) + GS II (300). This means: choose your optional subject based on ease of qualifying (clearing the minimum qualifying marks) rather than scoring potential. A subject you already know from your graduation is the best choice. Do not spend excessive time on the optional subject at the cost of GS or Essay preparation.
5
NCERT Class 6-12 is the backbone - read every relevant book before coaching material - BPSC Prelims and GS Mains questions are largely based on NCERT-level concepts for History, Geography, and Polity. Candidates who have strong NCERT foundations across these subjects can answer 60-70% of GS questions from that base alone. Do not jump to thick reference books or coaching notes before finishing NCERT. For BPSC specifically: NCERT History Class 6-12 (Ancient, Medieval, Modern India), NCERT Geography Class 6-12, NCERT Polity (Laxmikanth is the supplement - not replacement), and NCERT Economy Class 9-12. Then layer Bihar-specific material from the Bihar State Textbook Corporation books on top.
6
Read a Bihar newspaper daily - this is non-negotiable for Current Affairs preparation - Bihar-specific current affairs - government scheme launches, district-level events, Bihar cabinet decisions, appointments of Bihar officers, Bihar budget highlights, and state-level achievements - appear in every BPSC Prelims and are expected background knowledge in Mains answers. These events are not covered in national newspapers or standard current affairs magazines designed for UPSC. Read Hindustan (Hindi) or Prabhat Khabar (Hindi) - Bihar editions - daily for 30 minutes. Maintain a monthly current affairs diary specifically for Bihar events. This consistent 30-minute daily habit over 6-12 months builds a GK bank that no cramming session can replicate.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - BPSC CCE 2026
Most searched questions about BPSC 72nd CCE exam, syllabus and preparation answered by our experts
BPSC (Bihar Public Service Commission) recruits for Bihar state services while UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) recruits for All India Services. Both exams test General Studies at similar depth but BPSC is significantly more Bihar-specific - both in Prelims and Mains. The Prelims structure is similar (GS objective paper) but BPSC Mains has Essay carrying 300 marks and the Optional subject is now qualifying only - unlike UPSC where Optional carries 500 marks. Simultaneous preparation is feasible and recommended because the GS core (History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Science) is 70-80% common. Candidates preparing for UPSC CSE who are from Bihar should add a Bihar GK layer and Bihar-specific content to their existing preparation and attempt BPSC as a parallel target. The key additional effort is Bihar-specific History, Economy, schemes and current affairs.
The most significant structural change in BPSC Mains for 2026 is that the Optional Subject (Paper V) is now objective type and qualifying only - its 300 marks are NOT counted in the final merit total. Previously, the optional subject contributed to the Mains merit. Now, the final merit is calculated on only three papers: Essay (300) + GS Paper I (300) + GS Paper II (300) = 900 Mains marks, plus Interview (120 marks) = 1020 total. This fundamentally changes preparation strategy. Candidates should choose an optional subject they can qualify comfortably (usually from their graduation background), spend minimal time on it, and redirect that time to Essay and GS preparation. The Essay paper - previously seen as a formality by some - is now a decisive 300-mark merit paper that directly shapes your rank.
Unlike UPSC CSE which limits General category candidates to 6 attempts, BPSC CCE has no formal limit on the number of attempts - candidates can appear as many times as they are within the prescribed age limit. The upper age limit for General male candidates is 37 years, 40 years for General female, 40 years for BC/EBC male, and 42 years for SC/ST male. This means a General male candidate who starts appearing at 21 effectively has up to 16 years (assuming roughly one exam per year) of opportunities before aging out. This unlimited attempt policy makes BPSC a longer-runway exam than UPSC, and candidates should plan multi-year preparation strategies accordingly rather than treating each attempt as a final chance.
BPSC Mains descriptive papers (GS I, GS II and Essay) can be written in either Hindi or English - the choice is yours and you can declare your preferred medium while filling the form. However, the General Hindi paper (Paper I) is always in Hindi regardless of your chosen medium. Candidates choosing English medium should note that BPSC examiners and the exam itself is deeply rooted in the Bihar context, and essays or answers with a Bihar-specific perspective are expected. There is no systematic disadvantage to writing in English but Hindi-medium answers may be evaluated by a larger pool of examiners more familiar with Bihar's administrative context. Choose the language in which you can write more fluently and construct better arguments - language quality matters more than which language you choose.
The BPSC Interview (Personality Test) carries 120 marks out of a total 1020 merit marks - approximately 12% of the total. While this is smaller than the UPSC Interview (which carries 275 marks out of 2025, about 14%), 120 marks can still shift your rank significantly at the margins. The interview tests your personality, awareness of Bihar's administrative issues, knowledge of your optional subject, general awareness, and communication skills. Preparation should include: a detailed review of your application form and optional subject, current issues in Bihar governance, your district and state's recent development news, understanding of the post you are likely to get (Deputy Collector, DSP, BDO), and practice interviews. Bihar-specific awareness of governance challenges and welfare schemes is particularly valued in BPSC interviews.
Yes. BPSC conducts multiple examinations beyond the CCE. Major BPSC exams include: the Bihar Judicial Service Examination (BJSE) for Civil Judge posts, the Bihar Engineering Service Examination for state engineering services, the Bihar Agriculture Service Examination, and various departmental examinations for specific Bihar government departments. For school education, BPSC also conducts the BPSC TRE (Teacher Recruitment Examination) which has seen massive recruitment drives for Classes 1-12 teachers across Bihar's government schools. The BPSC TRE is the largest volume exam conducted by BPSC in terms of vacancies. Each of these examinations has its own separate notification, syllabus and selection process - check bpsc.bih.nic.in for the complete calendar of active BPSC examinations.
The 72nd BPSC CCE notification was released on 5 May 2026, applications closed on 31 May 2026, and the Prelims is scheduled for 26 July 2026. From the Prelims date, allow approximately 4-6 months for Mains (which was held April 2026 for the 71st CCE - the 72nd Mains is likely late 2026 or early 2027). If you are starting fresh in June 2026, you have roughly 7 weeks before the Prelims - that is enough to cover the syllabus if you study 8-10 hours daily with a focused plan. For new aspirants targeting the 73rd cycle (expected 2027), start now: spend 6 months building NCERT foundation and Bihar GK, then 6 months on Mains-level preparation and essay writing. BPSC rewards consistent long-term preparation over short-term cramming.

BPSC 72nd CCE 2026 - Complete Guide: Prelims and Mains Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Cut-offs and Free Mock Tests

The Bihar Public Service Commission Combined Competitive Examination (BPSC CCE) is Bihar's most prestigious state-level civil services examination, recruiting candidates for Deputy Collector, Deputy SP (DSP), Block Development Officer (BDO), and 30+ Group A and Group B posts in Bihar's state administration. The 72nd BPSC CCE 2026 notification was released on 5 May 2026 with the Prelims scheduled on 26 July 2026. The selection has three stages: Prelims (qualifying), Mains (merit), and Interview. The Prelims is a single 150-mark General Studies paper with objective type questions and 1/3 negative marking. Five options per question with Option E serving as an intentional skip with no penalty. General category Prelims cut-off is approximately 95-110 marks.

A key 2026 structural change: the Optional Subject (Mains Paper V) is now objective type and qualifying only - its 300 marks are NOT added to the merit total. Final merit = Essay 300 + GS Paper I 300 + GS Paper II 300 = 900 Mains marks + Interview 120 marks = 1020 total merit marks. This makes the Essay paper a decisive rank-determining paper - candidates must invest heavily in essay writing practice. Mains papers are descriptive and can be written in Hindi or English. The General Hindi paper is qualifying only (minimum 30 marks). There is no attempt limit for BPSC CCE - candidates can appear until they age out of the eligibility window (37 years for General male).

BPSC preparation is uniquely Bihar-focused - candidates must build strong Bihar GK covering Magadha history, Bihar rivers and geography, Bihar government schemes (Saat Nishchay, Jal Jeevan Hariyali), Bihar economy, and Bihar current affairs from local newspapers.
